A New Wind: Nancy Pelosi Elected Speaker of the House

Tyger Schonholzer
Some people have visions and Nancy Pelosi is certainly one of them. With her vision for a kinder and stronger America and a more honest and responsible government, she echoes the thoughts and feelings of many of her voters.

Yesterday, Nancy took office as the first female Speaker of the House and thus became the to date most powerful woman in North American history. She is a strong and popular leader and the many men and women of congress, who elected her to her new position, trust and respect her.

Ms. Pelosi's address to congress, aired on MNBC, was visionary and brilliant. She outlined a new direction in clear and precise words. She warned against excessive partisanism and urged the House to attempt cooperation and collaboration on major issues and concepts, important to the American people.

Nancy Pelosi is no lightweight. She is known as the Granite Lady and some Republicans are uncomfortable with her firm stance on a family oriented agenda. Yet others feel that she is the right person to unify a deeply divided congress and reassure us that our concerns have not been forgotten.

Because she is the first female Speaker, Ms. Pelosi will be scrutinized more closely than other House leaders before her. Cameras will likely follow her often, trying to catch an unguarded moment, exploit a human frailty. We will see how she handles the press and the pressure and whether she can bring her vision for America into reality.

Yesterday, a new force emerged from the pool of elected government. Today, a new wind begins to blow at the House of Congress. Will she rally the support she needs? Will she be able to stay her course? Only time will tell.

I do want to hear what you have to say about politics....but, I do know something about the issues because my own father ran in 2000. It really takes a lot for me not to see the truth-I want all facts, and not "political mush" thatmakes absolutely no sense. One talking arounf the issues-not for me.

Eleanor Roosevelt wrote," I am my husband`s Legs" when she went down into the coal mines of Kentucky. Hilary Clinton, yes, she stood by Clinton, but she DOES have a mind of her own. I am amazed that you do not look at Sarah Palin`s credentials. Especially regarding children with diasabilities.Pelosi has "open mouth disease" .The whole country has put there foot in her mouth because....she is an imbecile. She understands nothing of politics. This counrty is in more than a recession....itis moving into a depression. Pelosi, however, will fill her pockets. I would love to her your reply. Stori

Dennis Hastert (R) was Speaker of the House during G. W. Bush's presidency. He did not play a very significant political role. Before him, Newt Gingrich (R) served as Speaker during the Clinton administration. The last Democratic Speaker was Tipp O'Neill (D). He served from 1977 to 1987.
