A Woman's Guide to Wearing Jeans

Samantha Beck
Jeans...Americans love their jeans. That must be why there are so many different cuts and washes of jeans. Cut-wise, there are straight leg, bootcut, wide leg, flare, ripped and skinny jeans. Rinse-wise, there are dirty, light, dark, washed-out and bleached-out jeans. With so many different types of jeans, what's a girl to pair those denims with?

Here's a guide to figure out what to wear with certain cuts of jeans, and which cuts will work for your body type.

Pair bootcut jeans with a cute pair of heels and a top that is cinched at the waist. Tops that look best are an empire-waisted tank or a belted cardigan.

With wide-legs jeans, it's important to have the right top to balance the very unique jean cut. A cropped jacket or a tight top will make you look sexy instead of slouchy. Shoe-wise, wear flats. Don't let the shoes take away from the jeans.

For the ultra sleek skinny jeans, wear a jacket that falls below the hip but before the knees and pair high heels. Heels really help to pull the "skinny" look off and make your legs look sky high. A button-up shirt that is tucked in along with a slim belt will also help you look like a supermodel in skinny jeans.

If you're a fan of loose-fitting, comfy jeans, make sure you balance out the "boyish" look of the jeans with a feminine T-shirt or fitted button-up shirt. These jeans go best with sneakers.

Stirrup jeans are coming back into style. These jeans are pretty much made for wearing with almost knee-high boot. Stirrups stop the denim from bunching up underneath the boots.

Find the Perfect Jeans for your Body Type

If you've got a bit of a booty, wear jeans with any embellishments or designs on the back pockets. They only draw more attention to the butt area. A darker rinse can also downplay your backside.

A slightly flared leg looks great on women with a pear-shaped body. The slight flare helps to balance out the proportions of the hips.

If you're petite, stay away from capris that are cut too short-they'll only make your legs look shorter. Instead, opt for capris that skim just above your ankles.

Once you've found the perfect pair of jeans, take care of them at all costs. Fashion-wise, nothing is more devastating that a ruined pair of great jeans. To stop jeans from fading, wash them inside out. To help your denim keep their perfect shape, starch 'em.

I love the old straight leg jeans. Their not quite as skinny as the skinny versions. Great work.

Man, I didn't realize this was such a hot topic for women... I wonder how well a piece from a man's perspective would go over.

I recently discovered Levi's 512, which are great if you're a little on the chubby side. They have a great stretch to them and flatten your tummy. Thanks for the article!
