Applegarden is a wonderful pre-school that I have had the opportunity to work at and observe as a bystander. The teacher has a gentle rhythm throughout the day and is always striving to provide what will nourish the whole child. The toys are beautiful wooden ones, that promote open ended play consistent with the Waldorf philosophy. The outdoors area is set in the countryside among apple trees complete with farm animals, a garden, sand box, digging tools, and other natural developmentally appropriate toys.

Through out the day there is a predictable routine that the children follow, which provides the stability and comfort that children need. During this time there are wholesome snacks and meals made with vegetarian organic foods, art projects, songs to sing, and tons of open-ended toys to foster creativity. The teacher is very sweet and shows extreme respect and love for the child, something that is rare among childcare workers. Parent-teacher communication is excellent, and parents are welcome to discuss their child's needs.

High quality beeswax crayons are used as the teacher demonstrates art techniques right along with the children. Beautiful projects are created at an age appropriate level.

The room is beautifully painted using the Waldorf method of layering paints and in warm tones that Steiner recommends for young children. Beautifully simple dolls are available for nurturing play, as are silkies, or play silks, to be used in imaginative play. Natural wood blocks and toys are used for a multitude of tasks. Singing and verses accompany the day and provide a natural transition between activities.

A cove is made in one wall for children to climb into and around in. The walls are visually appealing, lights and corners softened with cloth.

Children are dressed in bright natural clothing and cloth diapering is preferred. Licensed characters and logos are discouraged in order to help the young mind develop naturally without advertising.

Outdoor time is popular, and in the beautiful setting in West Sonoma County, why wouldn't it be? The teacher is a wonderful gardener and truly shows her understanding and love of the outdoors through taking care of plants. Children learn respect for all things.

The teacher-child ratio is excellent, and the toys are age appropriate. The area is clean, comfortable, and home-like, an ideal setting for young children. Parents are friendly with each other and are eager to be involved in the 'preschool community' and help out with whatever is needed. This is a wonderful home preschool, and I strive to make my house as beautiful, calm, and serene as this preschool is.

I just happened across this site while googling for the Applegarden phone number. My 4yo son has been at Applegarden for nearly 2 years now. He loves it, We have to drag him away. I agree with every word of this review.
