A Worthy Tribute in Celebration of Being 100 Years Old

Reaching a Century Milestone

Lee Hansen

I just love sitting down and talking to older people. These senior citizens that I am referring to fall within the age range of 80 and above. I am intrigued by the stories they tell and the life they've lived. Their stories are riveting.

Personally, I have been privileged to have known and talked to many of them. The wealth of wisdom they share can be described as a priceless treasure.

Raytown, MO is blessed to have an official historian named Roberta Bonnewitz. She turned 100 years old this year. The Rice-Tremonti Home, a historical landmark is hosting a celebration in her honor on Sunday, September 25, 2011 from 4-6 p.m. It is located at 8801 E. 66th St.

At this event the community is invited to join The Friends of Rice-Tremonti for ice cream and the opportunity to hear her speak. She will reflect back on her memories of local historical figures from the area.

While this activity is free, your donations are gladly welcomed and appreciated. As an added bonus guests will be entertained by volunteers of the museum and Ms. Bonnewitz as they portray the history that took place in the Raytown area during the pinnacle of the California Gold Rush.

What a delightful afternoon this should be. Bring a lawn chair, relax and learn from a local historical legend. You're sure to be the wiser for it.

I remember once, in my twenties, sitting with my friend's elderly next door neighbor on his front porch. The people my age were asking why I was spending time with this old man. He was very old.....his father had been in the Civil War! I was fascinated. Our elders are live, talking history.
