A Writer Must Write

Writer's - at a Loss for Words

Loraine Alkire
Writer's write even if
At a loss for fodder still;
The words must spill
Upon the page;

A rant,
A Poem,
A Rage;
They groan!

They must write for:
To write is to breathe,
To write is to eat,
To write is to live in a quiet retreat,

Of their making.
Without taking a break,
Make no mistake,

Even if pure non-sense;
A writer writes,
To the consequence,
Of filling the page.

For they must engage,
With pen and pad,
With a flinch or in fray.
The page begs "Come hither...
Do this or whither"

To blacken a page,
Is better than not;
A writer must write
For this is his lot!

Epilogue:

This is My Pact

From this day forward I will be a writer with blacked up pages. I will be a writer for good or bad and I will have blacked up pages. And I will call myself a writer whether I mean it or not. And I will black up pages whether I use shoe polish or pixels. I'll black up some pages because from now on I am no longer a writer of blank pages.
Just write? Does anyone know my pain?

    I'm a reader who depends on the writer. I wish I could abandon the reponsiblities that restrain me from the indugence to read with abandon. Well done Lorraine!
