A Year Ago Today

A YEAR AGO TODAY

It was a year ago today

Coming home on a plane

Crossed the ocean, crossed a world, crossed a life

It was a year ago today

When everything changed

A year ago my back took your knife

A year ago today

I thought that I could say

I'd seen hell in all its technicolor pain

A year ago today

Bodies in the grave

You left me bleeding in the rain

Bodies on the ground, the smell won't go away

I see them when I sleep, take their bullets, take the flames

And when I needed you, you said that we were through

Another man in my bed and dead men still living in my head

It was a year ago today

I heard the words you say

All the lies, all the bravado, all the tears

It was a year ago today

You took my baby girl away

Maybe she'll forgive us one of these years

A year ago today

My innocence torn away

By the bodies on that hillside grave

A year ago today

The scars don't feel the pain

But the nightmares just won't go away

Bodies on the ground, the smell won't go away

I see them when I sleep, take their bullets, take the flames

And when I needed you, you said that we were through

Another man in my bed and dead men still living in my head

I just didn't know

I'd be at war again

The day I came home
