A Yule Log Carrier Makes a Great Holiday Christmas Gift

Great Gift to Hold Logs

Robin Vinci
Are you looking to find an unusual home made gift this year? Why not trying making a Yule Log Carrier? It is not too difficult and a great gift for anyone with a fireplace.

What You Need:

1 ¼ yard of heavy fabric such as flannel or denim (something that either fits the holiday or winter season)

1 ½ yards cotton duck fabric for lining

2 dowels, one 3/4" and one 24"

Large sewing paper 36 ½" by 42"
Sewing Machine

Fold the paper in half lengthwise and then crosswise. It should now measure 18 ¼' by 21". Draw a line 16" long (to make short cut edges) parallel to and 5"away from the long cut edges. Draw a perpendicular line from end of 16: line to cut long edges.

Draw a 9" long line, beginning at the short cut edges and parallel to and 3" away from long fold. Found the inner corner.

Cut on line through all the layers and you have made the pattern. Unfold it. Label grainline on long center fold. Label handle casings and gussets.

Using the pattern cut one log carrier piece using the outer fabric. Press under ½" on one handle casing for outer fabric and do it again with liner fabric.

Pin the outer lining to inner fabric on the right sides. Match the raw edges and fold. Stitch about 1/2 " from edge and leave an opening on the folds.

Cut the outer corners in a diagonal pattern and cut the inner quarters to stitches. Cut curves. Press the lining seam allowance toward lining.

Turn right side out and press seamed edges. Fold 2" to the other side on all four handles and pin. Stitch close to the seam edges on all three casing sides about ¼" from the edges. Stitch again about ¼ from seamed edges.

Pin gusset to side of carrier matching seamed edges. Stitch about 1/4 " from edges and do the same thing on all the gusset edges.

Insert handles and there you have it. A great home made Christmas present the receiver will surely use all season long.
