A to Z Crafts/Activities for Kids

Laura Ward
Children love doing arts and crafts and other type of activities! Help them learn their alphabet with some very simple, but fun, activities.

A-Draw a large letter A on a sheet of white paper with a pencil. Place your child's pointer finger in washable, non-toxic ink. Press their finger down two times to make the body of an ant. Using a black pen, draw legs on the ant. Do this around the letter A.

B-To help your child learn the letter B, blow up a balloon and allow your child to decorate the balloon with yarn for hair, wiggly eyes and markers. Make sure to draw the letter B on the back of the balloon.

C-Draw a letter C on a sheet of thick cardstock paper. Using colored construction paper, use a circle punch to punch out various circles. Glue the circles around the C in a collage.

D-Buy small daisy flowers from your local craft store. Draw a letter D on a sheet of cardstock paper. Glue the daisies around the D.

E- Boil eggs. Strain the water and dry the eggs off. Do not peel the eggs. Use a white crayon to write the letter E on the egg. Place the egg in a bowl of vinegar/food coloring to dye the egg. The E will show through the dye.

F- Give your child a roll of aluminum foil. Fold the foil into the letter F.

G- Make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with your child for lunch. Spread the peanut butter on the bread. Place grape jelly into a sandwich bag and cut off the end of the bag. Gently squeeze the bag of jelly into a G on the bread.

H-Make a heart friend! Cut out a large heart and glue accordian style folded strips of paper to it for arms. Use small hearts for the hands and feet. Give your heart friend wiggly eyes and a mouth.

I- Cut several colors of ice cream scoops from colored paper. Cut out brown ice cream cones as well. Glue the flavors to the cones and draw the letter I on the top in place of a cherry.

J-Make your own jewelry. Cut strips out of magazines. Try cutting the strips from a variety of colors from the magazines. Place glue and water in a dish and paint the magazine strip with the glue mixture. Roll the strip up around a pencil and secure it with extra glue if needed. Leave the magazine strips on the pencil until they are dry and formed. String the "beads" on a piece of yarn.

K-Make a large kite from colored sheets of construction paper in the shape of a diamond. On the paper, have your child write the letter W. Tie string down the bottom and allow your child to attach bows.

L-Make a lovely L. Draw an L on a large sheet of paper. Using a heart punch, punch out hearts from various colors of colored paper. Glue the hearts around the L.

M-Get messy! Mix dirt and water together to make a mud paste. In the mud, practice drawing the letter M. Wipe the M away and write it again!

N-Tie napkins together to make a net. Attach a stick to the top of the net for the handle. Cut out N's from cardboard and "fish" with the net for the letter N's.

O-Cut an orange in half. Cut one half in slices and leave the other as a half. Put orange paint on a paper plate. Place the oranges in paint. Draw a large letter O on the paper and have your child sponge the oranges around the O.

P-Purchase an unfinished piggy bank from your local craft store. Use pink paint to paint the pig. Allow the paint to dry according to the directions and then fill the bank with pennies!

Q-Cut out the queens from cards in a deck. Make a crown that fits your child's head and allow them to use the queens to glue to the crown for decorations.

R-Draw a rainbow on a large sheet of paper. Purchase self-adhesive rhinestones and affix them around the rainbow in a colored pattern.

S-Cut a paper plate in a spiral to form a snake. Write the letter S on the plate and decorate the snake with squares cut from paper and sequins. Attach a red tongue and some wiggly eyes.

T-Gather leaves and make a tree. Using brown construction paper, make a T shape. Glue leaves on the top part of the tree.

U-Make an umbrella from sheets of colored construction paper and use a pipe cleaner to make the handle into a U.

V-Make a violin from a large piece of cardboard. Use a dowel rod for the bow. Have your child decorate the violin with the letter V.

W-Make chocolate pudding and sprinkle crushed gummy worms over the top for "dirt". With gummy worms, use the worms to make a W over the top of the pudding and oreo mixture.

X-Gather dog bones and draw a large X on a piece of black cardboard. Glue the dog bones on the X. This should reveal an x-ray!

Y-Using yarn and beads, make Y necklaces. Cut a piece of yarn to fit around your child's neck loosely. String beads on the yarn and tie it in a knot to secure. Tie a piece of yarn around the center of the necklace. String more beads on the yarn hanging and then tie to secure. You should have a Y shape when finished.

Z- Purchase zippers from your local craft store. Using a hot glue gun, glue the zippers onto a sheet of cardboard in a Z shape. Practice zippering the zippers!
