AARP - American Association of Retired Persons

For Seniors Age 50 + Get Discounts - Information Concerning Your Future

Janice Meyer
What is AARP, and what does it stand for? AARP stands for American Association of Retired Persons. It is an organization for people 50 and older, and there is an annual member fee of $16 for two people (husband and spouse), or partner.

When you join AARP, you will receive a membership card that should be kept in your wallet at all times. This card can get you many discounts on hotel rooms, in some restaurants, insurance, online services, phones and much more. You will also receive the monthly AARP Bulletin, and the bimonthly Magazine which covers current concerns of the over-50 population. The website address for AARP is: www.aarp.org.

If you have questions about the new health care reforms, go to their website and click on a link, 'Answers to Your Questions About Health Care Reform - AARP Bulletin Today.' There are 15 pages of questions and answers that cover a lot of the confusing features of the Health Care plan. One example of a question and answer is shown below:

Q. We have a high-deductible health plan and pay extra for preventive care like checkups and screenings. Is it true that insurance policies will have to offer these for free? And will Medicare also offer them for free?

A. Yes, it's true. Under the health care reform law, group and individual health policies that begin after Sept. 23 must offer certain free preventive health services. (Check website for more details.) Annual wellness visits will also be free starting in 2011.

My husband and I have been members of AARP for a number of years, and have used the discounts especially on motel payments. We take motor trips quite often, and have benefitted from these discounts on a regular basis. When we stay at a motel that offers a discount to AARP members, and there is a restaurant connected with the motel, we usually get a discount on our meals there also.

AARP membership also includes advocacy information which includes a voice in Washington and in your state, representing you on issues like Medicare, Social Security and consumer safety.

It also includes valuable information for living well. You learn more about healthy living, financial control and planning, consumer protection and caring for your parents. There are also some community services, such as local chapters of AARP, driver safety courses and a nationwide volunteer network.

"Segunda Juventud" is a quarterly Spanish language newspaper from AARP reaching the Hispanic community age 50 plus.

AARP is working toward enhancing quality of life for all as we age. They lead positive social change and promote the value to members by displaying information, advocacy and service.

One of AARP's saving's plans, as shown in the current issue of the AARP Magazine, is the Auto Insurance Program from The Hartford. With many current auto insurance plans, you would save at least $402 when you switch from companies like Geico, State Farm and Allstate. Just call the Hartford at 1-888-629-7728.

The current issue of AARP Magazine also has a piece on Dr. Oz, which is a 6-month health plan. He talks about diets, and what is good for you. Most of the menus he suggests sound good to me, except for the yogurt. I cook with yogurt, but do not like to eat it plain. Dr. Oz also has an exercise plan with pictures. This is my favorite part of his health regimen.

You can also contact AARP by regular mail at the following address: AARP, 601 E Street N.W., Washington, DC 20049. You can reach them by telephone at: 1-888-OUR-AARP (1-888-787-2277).

I love AARP and have belonged for years. I think their lobbying power is all that is saving Social Security for current retirees and those to come.
