AARP was initially founded in 1947 as the National Retired Teachers Association, but it became the American Association of Retired Persons in 1958. AARP functions as a nonpartisan advocacy group for its members who, contrary to popular belief, do not have to be retired in order to join. In addition to lobbying various state and federal governments, AARP also offers benefits and discounts to its members, such as automobile insurance.
The Hartford Financial Services Group, commonly referred to simply as "The Hartford," is the primary partner for automobile insurance offered through AARP. The Hartford has been in business for about 200 years and offers a variety of insurance and financial security products. As part of the AARP coverage package, the Hartford offers several additional discounts, including multi-car discounts and anti-theft device discounts.
The AARP program administered by The Hartford is a one-year program, meaning that premiums are reviewed, adjusted if necessary, and billed on a 12-month cycle. Research on the insurance policy can be done on the AARP website or via telephone. All service, with the exception of claims adjustment, is conducted via Internet, telephone or through standard mail.
In addition to its other services, the AARP program guarantees lifetime coverage for its members. This means that your insurance acquired through The Hartford can not be summarily terminated due to age considerations. Additionally, AARP has arranged for a "Disappearing Deductable" for safe drivers; with this feature, the client's deductible is reduced by $50 for every consecutive year she drives accident-free, to the point where there is no deductible for an accident.
AARP insurance administered by The Hartford offers standard liability, comprehensive and collision, and uninsured motorist insurance. Liability insurance covers the damage done to another vehicle, person or property by the driver up to a pre-set amount. Comprehensive and collision cover damage done to your vehicle by another driver, act of nature, or other types of damage in which the driver is not at fault. This coverage also replaces your vehicle in case of theft. Uninsured motorist provides coverage to the driver in the event they are in an accident that is caused by someone without automobile insurance. This covers the driver, but not the uninsured person.
For motorists who are unsure how much coverage they need, the AARP/The Hartford offers a questionnaire, administered online or via telephone, which can assess the needs of the motorist and customize policies.
