Abbott Labs Recalls Blood Glucose Testing Strips

Testing Strips Sold by Abbott Labs Were Found to Give False Readings

Pat Anthony
Abbott Labs has announced a recall 359 million blood glucose test strips. These are the testing strips used by people needing to monitor their blood glucose.

According to reports, Abbott labs recalled the blood glucose testing strips because there is a concern that the strips may not absorb the blood correctly. Those monitoring their blood sugar need an accurate reading.

In some instances having a correct blood sugar reading can mean the difference between life and death. Anyone using insulin according to the readings they obtain from an inaccurate blood glucose test strip may be using an incorrect amount of insulin.

The blood glucose testing strips recalled by Abbott labs were made in the United Kingdom. Production dates for the recalled paper strips are January through May. Abbott Labs has not determined the cause of the faulty readings.

According to a spokesperson for Abbott Labs, the problem with the test strips was discovered by the company during some routine testing. Following this Abbott Labs reported that 22 cases of glucose testing strips that are causing false low readings would be recalled. The information was reported to the United States Food and Drug Administration.

The recall of these blood glucose testing strips is considered voluntary. To date no health issues have been reported. To view the press release with information about lot numbers involved in this recall visit this website.
