Abby Cadabby Fairy-in-Training Halloween Costume for Adults

Tips Creating this Abby Cadabby Costume

The Muppets on Sesame Street are a lot of fun for children as they play and sing and learn about numbers and colors but why should kids get to have all the fun? I am a big fan of the Muppets especially The Count, Gonzo and his chickens, Oscar the Grouch, Cookie Monster, Elmo, to name just a few. One of my favorite and fairly recent Muppets who have come to Sesame Street is Abby Cadabby. Abby Cadabby is a three year old fairy-in-training who "moved" to Sesame Street August 14, 2006. She is absolutely adorable with her pink body, pink dragonfly wings and her pink and purple pigtails. According to the Abby Cadabby website, Abby Cadabby loves the color pink, carries a magic wand "cell phone" to call her mommy, wears an iridescent blue dress and has two catchphrases; "That's so magic" and "Gotta poof." She's learning to use her magic "for good everyday" though sometimes she has magical "accidents" and turns things into pumpkins. I don't think that little girls should get all the fun of dressing up as Abby Cadabby for Halloween so I have come up with a plan on how to make an adult-size Abby Cadabby Halloween costume. To get you started and inspired to make your Abby Cadabby Halloween costume, check out the Google search pictures for Abby Cadabby here.

Basic materials needed to create one adult-size Abby Cadabby Halloween Costume: Hot pink sweat suit; hot pink mittens; hot pink slippers; sleeveless blue dress or nightgown; felt fabric in pink, blue and yellow; glue; Velcro; one belt; one pink or white domino eyemask; blue, black, pink, purple, and white, paint; hot pink pom- pom ball; small paint brushes; long thick fake black eyelashes; headband; purple, blue, yellow, and hot pink yarn; wings; stick; pink and yellow ribbon; glitter spray; small pumpkins.

The first thing needed to make an adult-size Abby Cadabby Halloween costume is a hot pink sweat suit; both top and bottoms. The sweats need to be turned inside out so the fuzzy part is showing which will mimic Abby Cadabby's fuzzy Muppet body. Don't forget to cut off all the tags. If you have a hard time finding a hot pink sweat suit, then you could substitute a hot pink fuzzy long sleeved sweater and a pair of hot pink tights.

To complete the "body" part of Abby Cadabby's fuzzy Muppet body look, you will need a pair of fuzzy pink mittens and a pair of fuzzy pink slippers. There's a pair of slippers that would be perfect for the Abby Cadabby Halloween costume at MookieGifts.com for about $10.00. If necessary, hot pink fuzzy socks would work as well.

Abby Cadabby wears an iridescent blue dress with a ragged hem. To achieve this look you can use a filmy pale blue nightgown or sleeveless dress and cut the hem so that it is pointy and ragged and reaches to about your knees. If the nightgown is transparent, that is fine as well since you will be wearing hot pink sweats or a sweater underneath it. If you wanted, you could even use a long pale blue sleeveless tank top shirt and add a "ragged hem look" to the bottom by sewing on about five inches of pale blue tulle. To add an extra accent to the Abby Cadabby dress, I recommend adding a ragged blue belt and a ragged blue piece of fabric around the neck to help add to the look of fairy clothing. The OnlineFabricStore.net sells baby blue glitter felt fabric that would be perfect for this purpose.

To make your Abby Cadabby belt, start with any belt that fits around your waist. I recommend using an old belt that you no longer need. Next, cut out a piece of the blue felt with a straight edge at the top and a ragged edge on the bottom. Cut the piece of felt so that it goes about one inch above the belt and about two to three inches below the belt. Felt doesn't fray so you don't need to worry about it unraveling. Now attach the piece of baby blue felt to the belt, ragged pointy side down. You can use glue or Velcro to attach the felt to the belt, fold down the top of the felt piece and glue it to the inside of the belt. The piece of ragged felt fabric to go around your neck can be made the same way though no belt will be needed, you can just use the felt piece alone and attach it with Velcro.

To create an Abby Cadabby mask for your Halloween costume, you will need one pink or white domino eyemask such as the type sold at Seasonal Reflections. I chose this type of mask because I thought it would be the most comfortable to wear for an extended period of time. Take your eyemask and freehand paint around the eye holes to look like Abby Cadabby's using pictures of her to help guide you. She has blue "eye liner" above her eyes and has thick black eye lashes. You can glue on either fake eye lashes above the eye holes of the mask or use black yarn to create bigger eye lashes. Glue a hot pink pom-pom ball just below eye level on the raised nose part of the mask for Abby Cadabby's nose. Don't forget to add three big purple paint circles as Abby Cadabby's fairy freckles. Paints for this purpose can be purchased at your local Wal-Mart or craft supply store.

Abby Cadabby has dragonfly type wings. You can make these wings yourself by gluing tulle fabric on floral wire and then adding pink paint accents or you can buy fairy wings at most stores that carry Halloween costumes. AnniesCostumes.com offers a very nice selection of different wings for Halloween, several of which would work for Abby Cadabby.

Abby Cadabby has lots of purple hair sprinkled with hot pink strands in two pigtails. To re-create this look, you can buy a wig that is made of purple hair, tie it in two pig tails with yellow flower ties and leave bangs hanging in front. If you have enough hair of your own, you can purchase temporary hair color such as that sold at Streekers.com, dye your hair purple with pink streaks and then tie it in pig tails with yellow flower ties. Of course you can create your own Abby Cadabby hair wig with purple and pink yarn and a purple or pink plastic headband. Try to find a headband that is durable enough to handle the addition of yarn hair and make sure it fits your head before you buy it. Purple yarn pig tails with pink yarn strands can be attached to the headband with heavy thread or fishing line. In a pinch, you can even buy an Abby Cadabby pigtail headband for about $7.00 and make it work for your adult head size.

The last addition to the Abby Cadabby Halloween costume is her magic wand. You can either buy this or create your own. To create your own magic wand, you will need one stick. It can be any type of stick, even one from a tree in your yard and it doesn't necessarily need to be perfectly straight. You will need glue and hot pink and yellow ribbon to cover your stick. You will also need yarn in pink, purple, blue and yellow to create a yarn ball for the top of your stick. Create your yarn ball and attach it to your stick. Once it is attached, start at the top under the yarn ball and glue the hot pink ribbon to the stick wrapping and overlapping it as you work your way down the stick. Once your stick is completely wrapped in hot pink ribbon, add a few pieces of yellow ribbon accents down the stick/magic wand. Now you have an Abby Cadabby magic wand.

Once your entire costume is complete, you can give it a quick dusting of glitter spray for an extra sparkle. Since Abby Cadabby is a fairy-in-training and she accidentally turns things into pumpkins, you might carry several small pumpkins with you to lend an extra touch of authenticity to your costume. Don't forget to add Abby Cadabby's catchphrases now and then "That's so magic" and "Gotta poof" and your Halloween is sure to be magical!
