Abby Sunderland is Safe and Sound - Quantas Airbus Made Radio Contact with Teen Sailor

Abby Sunderland Has Been Found Safe and Sound in the Indian Ocean with a Broken Mast

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Abby Sunderland, the 16-year-old from southern California circling the globe solo in a sailboat is alive and well. A search and rescue mission was launched for the teen sailor in the southern Indian Ocean after a distress signal was triggered on the sailboat during rough seas.

A Quantas Airbus A330 from Australia flew over Abby Sunderland's last known location and were able to locate the boat with the teen safely on board and made radio contact with her. The mast was broken off of the 40 foot boat in stormy seas sending the teen adrift in the Indian Ocean with no sails 2,000 from Madagascar and 500 miles north of the French Antarctic Islands. It is being reported that Sunderland has confirmed that she is inside the sailboat unharmed and has a space heater and enough food to last two weeks.

A fishing vessel diverted by the government of Reunion, a small French island, should reach Abby Sunderland's location sometime on Saturday. Sunderland's family received a distress signal about an hour after they had spoken with their daughter on Thursday and began coordinating a rescue effort on her behalf. The Australian military has also diverted one of their ships and is en route to the teen's location as well.

Abby Sunderland set sail on January 23, 2010 from Marina Del Rey in California in hopes of becoming the youngest sailor to circumnavigate the globe without stopping. Sunderland's hopes were dashed when she was forced to make a couple of stops during her voyage due to mechanical difficulties.

Sunderland has remained in close contact with her family via satellite phone throughout her journey and she has a blog chronicling her journeys online.

This isn't the first time the Sunderland's have been keeping track of one of their children alone at sea. Abby Sunderland's older brother, Zac, completed his solo circumnavigation of the globe, which included stops, last year at 17-years-old.

Anxious hours passed while Sunderland's family awaited news from their Thousand Oaks, California home on Thursday. While Sunderland's family is confident in her sailing capabilities, they also recognized that the ocean can be very unforgiving in these situations. While the teen sailor will fall short of her goal, no one is complaining-good news is always welcome.
