ABC Cancels Both All My Children and One Life to Live

One Soap Remaining on ABC Daytime Lineup

ABC has just stunned its daytime audience with the announcement that both All My Children and One Life to Live have been canceled. Fans of the shows were aware that either of the two daytime dramas could face the chopping block in the immediate future. However, the double cancellation, announced earlier today in a press release, came as a shock.

Both of these daytime soaps have been around for many years. One Life to Live premiered on July 15, 1968; All My Children came along a year and a half later, on January 5, 1970. Each one is the brainchild of creator Agnes Nixon; because of this, they exist in the same "universe" and have had crossovers between the two shows, both of which are set in fictional towns in Pennsylvania.

These two shows are the second and third ABC soaps to be canceled from the daytime lineup since 2000. Port Charles last aired on October 3, 2003. It was an innovative General Hospital spin-off that only took up a 30-minute timeslot. In addition, another General Hospital spin-off, Night Shift, aired only on SOAPnet and lasted two seasons, ending in October 2008.

All My Children will be the first to disappear from the ABC daytime lineup; its last episode will air in September. One Life to Live will remain on the air until January of next year. After their final episodes, General Hospital will be ABC's only daytime soap opera. At this time, there is no indication that it is in danger, although fans of the show would probably not be surprised if that were to change in the future. For how long will the only soap left on ABC's daytime lineup survive? The diehard fans will certainly not abandon their show, but many of those who were more interested in either or both of the canceled shows will likely stop watching General Hospital out of protest.

After these two shows are gone, their timeslots will be filled with The Chew, a show about food, and The Revolution, a show depicting women undergoing a transformation through weight loss. For soap fans, the question is obvious: will these new shows manage to pull in the ratings ABC expects?

ABC why have you killed our families we have grown up with and watched for years? You think we would rather have you tell us how we are supposed to cook, act, look and dress your nothing but Communist! This is supposed to be a FREE America where we can be our individual selves. You've taken away an American Family Tradition. Watching our SOAP families has helped us in our dreams, hopes, gave us comfort and an escape for problems we all deal with everyday in this world. I believe people need help in dealing with everyday problems that arise in this world and we have recieved it watching these SOAPS. They do more to help us survive our own lives then you ever will with your do what we want you to do new programs.
SAVE THE AMERICAN FAMILY TRADITION -- RETURN OUR SOAPS!!!

I don't have time to watch daytime TV because of my business, but if I did, I certainly would rather watch a soap opera than those silly new shows they are going to try.

OMG, Wow, and shock. It seems this bad economy has struck quite a blow. Great reporting! :-)

I am so stunned! Who do they listen to anyway for their replacement shows? Good report.

Kenzy, I couldn't believe it happened to both of them. I knew they were talking about getting rid of one, but this is just nuts.

I can't believe they canceled both shows and I doubt 'GH' will be around much longer. 'OLTL' and 'GH' have been my guilty pleasure since I was a kid and has been a part of my daily routine for years. I'm not interesting in seeing the replacement shows at all and will likely spend more time watching movies and other shows on satellite instead of watching ABC or the other major networks.
