ABC Lost Its Chance to Build Its Kingdom as the Final Scenes of 'All My Children' Are Taped

Today, marked an anniversary, a sad anniversary for soap fans, for the soap industry, for scripted television and for television in general. Today, was the day that "All My Children" finished its last taping for the broadcast television network ABC, its home for over 40 years. This was the home that made Susan Lucci aka, Erica Kane, a star.

Of course, "All My Children" will live on in the world of the world wide web. Rumors state that it will also be heading to another television network (which one nobody is saying). Yet, it is still a sad state the executives running ABC/Disney was so heartless and so foolish in letting go of this institution of a show. This show has been on longer than some of these executives have been alive and this show has been on the air longer than most of these executives have been working.

This show, along with ABC's two other soaps: "One Life To Live" and "General Hospital" has helped to fund many of the prime time television shows, shows that have come, gone and have been long forgotten. Yet, the soaps have remained. The soaps continue to have fans.

Some people will tell you that soaps have outlived their purpose. Yet, these are people who do not understand what they are saying. These are people who do not realize the money making potential these soaps have. These people do not remember the glory days of the 1980's when the soaps were getting the attention that they deserve. These people do not realize that ABC executives should have been building on those glory days and by now should have had a huge kingdom built around those shows.

Instead, ABC cancelled "All My Children" and "One Life To Live." Today, the show taped its last day for this network. Today, ABC lost its chance.

Tomorrow, a new chapter will begin. The company, Prospect Park, will be taking over this show. Soon we will hear what their plans will be for this show and "One Life To Live." Let's hope they can build that kingdom that these shows deserve.

It's not looking good. Last I heard, they hadn't even contacted Michael Knight (Tad). AMC without him is just too boring for words. Do you know if Susan Lucci plans to continue? I know Debbie Morgan has already bailed with her TV hubby likely right behind her. So sad.
