ABC's the Bachelorette: Meet the Bachelors Fighting for Ali
Season Six of the Bachelorette Continues the Rose Ceremony
Now she says she has rearranged her priorities. "I gave up my job. I gave up my apartment. I gave up everything," says Ali on the show's premiere episode of The Bachelorette. So who are the guys she is pinning her hopes on? We found out in Episode One where the 25 guys said hello to Ali for the first time, but only 17 walked away with a coveted rose and place in the house. says Ali.
Meet the bachelors who jockeyed for a spot in Ali's heart this first night:
Chris H., 27, Vancouver, Canada, real estate developer. Would it surprise anyone to know that Chris H. plays hockey? According to the official ABC Bachelorette Web site, his favorite book is Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People. Rose!
Chris L., 32, Cape Cod, MS, landscaper. Chris is another one with a sad story, but also a story of fortitude. He was a high school math teacher in the New York City school system when his mother fell ill. He moved back home to take care of her. "I would have been kicking myself for the rest of my life. Life is so fleeting, so short. Love is the only reality." During his one-on-one time, he talked to Ali about his mom but didn't tell her that his mother had recently died. Rose!
Chris N., 29, Orlando, entrepreneur. This bachelor is most proud of the fact that he started his own business. He's easy on the eyes, too.Rose!
Craig M., 33, dental sales, Toronto. Just judging by the first episode and the other guys reaction to him, Craig could win a contest: how to rub people the wrong way. According to his initial interview, he has lived single for the last five years. He says, "When I go out and hit the clubs, I'm definitely good with the girls. It always goes over well." Craig M. had one retort or piece of advice after another to offer the other guys which caused more than one person to write his name down when the guys were asked to choose someone who may not be on the show for the right reasons. Then there is the issue of his hair. You be the judge of that one. Alas, Rose!
Craig R., 27, Philadelphia, attorney. One might view him as chivalrous, looking out for Ali's interest as he warns her that not all of the guys are "there" for her. One might also view him as a snitch. Upon learning that Justin was a wrestler, Craig R. became very vocal, telling Justin that if he ever suspected that someone was on the show to further his own gains, he'd blow the whistle on the guy to Ali. He then went into his one-on-one time and proceeded to do just that. Rose!
Derek, 28, Warren, MI, sales mgr. Derek uses a bit from Ali's stint on The Bachelor to gain her attention as he exits the limo. He presents her with a handful of leaves, telling her to catch a falling leaf and make a wish. As another guy is singing Ali an original song, Derek says, "It makes me kind of sad that I didn't have anything planned." No Rose!
Derrick, 27, San Diego, construction engineer. He doesn't give Ali his real name upon greeting her. Instead he tells her to call him Shooter, and that he'll explain the meaning later. True to his word, during his one-on-one time, Shooter proceeds to tell Ali that he gained the name Shooter because of a sexual mishap in college. Oops. Later he regrets having told her, saying he has been publicly humiliated and just wants to go home. He gets his wish. No Rose!
Frank, 30, Chicago, retail manager. Frank says he had an incredible career as an acquisitions and mergers consultant in Chicago, but he gave it all up to chase his dream of becoming a screenwriter. He moved back in with his folks after traveling to Paris to write. During his interview, he confided, "Passion is so much more important than money." When he found out it was Ali he blurted out, "We are getting married...That's what's going to happen." For his grand entrance, Frank popped out of the sunroof and climbed atop the limo before coming back down to earth to greet the beautiful maiden. There's a lot to the Frank story that probably falls somewhere in between his Paris story and his listing as a retail manager. Rose!
Hunter, 28, San Antonio, internet account exec. As he exits the limo, Hunter tells Ali that he'd planned something very clever to say, but upon seeing her, all he can think is how beautiful she is. He follows with an explanation that the limo wait was long, so the next thing he has to think about is finding a bathroom. This guy will be the comic relief of the show. Inside, Hunter pulls out a ukulele to perform a song he has written just for the occasion. The song is hysterical and captures Ali's heart. Even most of the guys are in awe of his clever thought. But not all of the guys. Rose!
Jason, 27, Denver, construction consultant. Another quasi comedian. Jason exits the limo on the wrong side. He gets back in, climbs through the sunroof, to perch atop the car. He turns his back towards Ali...and does a spot on backflip in front of her. After greeting her formally, he says, "Let's go in here and get it started." No Rose!
Jay, 29, Barrington, RI, personal injury attorney. Jay confessed in his interview that being a personal injury attorney is more or less the family business. From the get go, Jay just "didn't bring it" as he describes. Time and time again he missed opportunities to make conversation with Ali. "I totally dropped the ball." He says he wouldn't have given him a rose either. No Rose!
Jesse, 24, Peculiar, MO, general contractor. His come-on line out of the limo is odd, catching Ali off guard. "How do you feel about dating a Peculiar man?" The corny line works. He tells Ali during their one-on-one time that the suit he is wearing is the first suit he's ever owned. At the chidings of his sister, he made Ali a gift the night before he was to come to on the show. It's a heart necklace of wood, created with a jigsaw. Ali is obviously taken by the gesture. Rose!
John C., 32, WA, hotel business development. He is ready for the competition even before it begins. "If someone gets in my way, watch out, because I'm going to come after you. He did a fake proposal to Ali, using a cubic zirconium ring. Rose!
John N., 27, Wichita, KS, engineering software sales. John N., we hardly knew ye. I've seen this episode twice now, and I still don't remember him. Neither will Ali. No Rose!
Jonathan, 30, Houston, weatherman. Jonathan, a one-time stand up comedian, pitched hard from that initial audition tape. He combined weather with his desire to get on the show. He replaced clouds and the like with roses on his weather map. Of he strategy for winning Ali's heart, he says, "I'll use my humor, if she laughs. If she doesn't, I'll stop." His token gift upon meeting Ali was an old-fashioned weather magnet. Ali believes the gift means she'll always have sunshine following her. During the one-on-one time, which he shared with Craig M., as well as Ali, Jonathan dominated the conversation, and Craig M. chastised him soundly. It didn't seem to bother Ali. Rose!
Justin, 26, Toronto, CA, entertainment wrestler. Rated R, aka Justin, popped out of the limo sporting a broken foot, an injury received by his wrestling alter ego. He describes himself: "The villain I play in the ring is Rated R and probably the opposite of what I am in real life." In fact, Justin, who was raised by his mother and grandmother, calls himself a grandma's boy. During his one-on-one time, Justin tore open his button down shirt to reveal a t-shirt bearing the words Rated R, while he proceeded to tell Ali about his wrestling passion. It didn't win him fans among the other guys. When asked to write down the name of someone who was on the show for the wrong reasons, the other guys overwhelmingly voted for Justin. Ali took him aside for a second chat, and she didn't agree with the group. Rose!
Kasey, 27, Clovis, CA, advertising exec. Kasey is the guy who will be known from the start as the scary guy. From the moment he presents himself at the limo, he starts announcing to Ali that he will be the man who protects her heart. "I know I will be the last man standing." During his one-on-one time, Kasey tells Ali he comes from a divorced household, much like Ali. He says his dad cheated on his mom and "from that moment on I would never make another woman hurt like that." Previews of upcoming episode hint that Kasey will continue with the over-the-top behavior going from eccentric to downright scary. Rose!
Kirk, 27, Green Bay, WI, sales consultant. Kirk doesn't come out of the limo bearing a gift like the others. He proceeds to make her a gift, a rose made out of paper. "You are giving out roses. I figured you deserve one yourself." During his one-on-one, Kirk present Ali with a scrapbook he's made. It is meant to give her a snapshot of himself. Many of the guys make fun of him, including Craig M. who says, "If someone made me a scrapbook, I'd be afraid." But Ali loves it, and takes time to read each page. "Who is going to be laughing when I get a rose," Kirk says. Rose!
Kyle, 26, Colorado, outdoorsman. Kyle stood out from the first second of his interview right through when he did a bad mock dance move of reeling Ali towards him as he exited the limo. Since when is "outdoorsman" an occupation? He says he has a better relationship with the outdoors than he does with the women in Colorado. Kyle adds, "I need someone to go ice fishing with." During his one-on-one time, he gave Ali a lucky fish hook that he wears on his hat. He proceeds to show us all the dead things. Kyle wasn't worried about the competition. "I'm definitely not afraid of the other 25 guys...I've killed a bear." He should have been more afraid. No Rose.
Phil, 30, Chicago, investment manager. Phil is one of a few who had sad tales to tell. His younger brother had passed away recently. "My whole life changed," he explains. "I've reshifted my priorities." Like Ali, he realized there's more to life than work. "One big thing that is missing from my life is the woman...I am ready." Ali was not. No Rose!
Roberto V., Charleston, SC, insurance agent. Roberto makes a great first, second and third impression on Ali. When host Craig Harrison brings out the rose meant to be the "first impression" rose to be given out by Ali to the bachelor who has won her over in some way, Roberto swoops in and asks Ali for his one-on-one time. During his time, Roberto proceeds to give Ali a little instruction on salsa dancing. He makes a huge hit with the bachelorette. He gets the coveted first rose of the evening. Rose!
Steve, 30, Cleveland, sales rep. When Steve exits the limo he is taken aback. He had remembered Ali's favorite color from her time on The Bachelor. "I predicted you were going to be wearing yellow." Ali, clad in black, says she was just trying to change things up a bit. Rose!
Ty, 31, Franklin, TN, medical sales/musician. Ty is another with a tale of woe that may come back to bite him early on. He is just recently divorced, by a mere few months. Still, he says, "II don't regret being divorced. I learned so much, not just about relationships, but about myself...I'm ready for the next step." He tells his best friend, a dog named Paxton, "We may find you a new mama." Was anyone listening to him say "new"? Rose!
Tyler M., 25, Austin, catering manager. Tyler steps in it right out of the limo. He remarks to Ali that she caught his eye the moment she stepped out of her limo to meet Jake wearing cowboy boots. Ali looks perplexed, saying she wasn't wearing boots. As Tyler went into the house, Ali tells an aside, "I definitely was not wearing cowboy boots." And she definitely wasn't giving him a flower. No Rose!
Tyler V., 25, Chelsea, VT, online advertising. On ABC's official Bachelorette Web site, Tyler claims his most embarrassing moment was age 8 when he accidentally went into the girls' bathroom at camp. Even for the remaining bachelors, some stood out more than others during that first meeting.Rose!
Stay tuned for Monday's (May 31st) show when the real fun begins, and Ali begins the task of whittling away the numbers. The Bachelorette, ABC, Mondays at 8 p.m., EST.
