ABC's of Having a Pet Cat

Alex Tekan
Owning a pet involves a lot of time and patience especially if you want a cat. And having a cat as a pet would require one to be well-versed in the art of cat care. Having a pet cat is not just giving it canned food. There is so much more that a cat needs and these need to be met to keep a cat healthy. Though cats are able to care for themselves, one still needs to know the basics of feline care and health. To be a responsible feline pet owner, do consider the following:

Feeding time. It is not unusual that pet owners feed their cats table scraps and/or left over food. But do understand that proper dental care also requires that a cat eat tough meat for proper care. Human food tend to be softer and more sugary thus resulting in susceptibility to tooth decay. When this is given to cats, and since they do not brush their teeth, then tooth decay in cats is a cause for concern.

Having a home. This can be done by removing dangerous or unhealthy items in the immediate vicinity. A good litter box is the first investment one has to make in owning a feline. There are many options in the market, one even with a self-cleaning function. Also, cats love toys and these are a must in proper pet care and exercise. If one wants to make a full investment, cat beds are also good for one's pet. Some beds are even heated for the cat's preference.

Vet care. Regular check ups with the vet is also one thing that responsible pet owner must invest in. Also important is having the cat spayed or neutered so that there would be no hormonal or kitten issues as one takes care of the pet. Yearly check ups and vaccine shots may cost money but they would only serve to insure the health and well-being of the cat. It is thus recommended that one keeps a piggy bank if ever the need arises.

So as one can see, pet ownership is not a walk in the park. One needs to properly feed them, provide a clean and comfortable home and periodic check ups are needed to make the cat's healthy. When one is able to make this a reality, the pet will provide lots of memorable times with the owner.
