Aberdeen Terrier: Old Scottish Dog Breed Developed in the 1700s

Elisia Yun
The Aberdeen Terrier is an old Scottish breed of terrier with a long history which dates back to the 1700s when they were developed; they are certainly a fascinating, and adorably cute breed of terrier which would make a wonderful pet. However, nowadays, there are not many Aberdeen Terriers left as they are not being bred generally; in fact, many of the said Aberdeen Terriers are really Scottish Terriers. More information on the Aberdeen Terrier can be found on Central Pet, and more information about the controversy surrounding them can be found there as well.

Aberdeen Terriers are considered small in the range of dog sizes; generally speaking, the average dog will grow up to around nine to eleven inches, and will weigh only at around 20 pounds as they are not that heavy at all. They have wiry coats which are similar to the Scottish Terriers, and they come in many shades and colors like black, brindle, wheaten, and shades of gray. Many would compare their physical appearances to the Scottish Terriers.

The Aberdeen Terriers were originally bred to hunt rodents, rabbits, foxes, and badgers during hunting trips. Historically speaking, they would hunt together in packs; nowadays, they are more independent. The Aberdeen Terriers are swift dogs, and have been known to be fearless, and feisty specie.

The Aberdeen Terrier, despite their long history dating back to the 1700s, has always been closely tied to the Scott Terriers; in fact, many people believe that the Aberdeen Terrier may be the precursor to the Scottish Terriers. Possibly, because of the controversy of their history, and whether they are related to the other Terriers, there have been many debates concerning whether the Aberdeen Terrier is actually their own distinct breed.

As mentioned before, there aren't many Aberdeen Terriers as they are not being bred anymore; generally speaking, the Aberdeen Terriers around today are really Scottish Terriers. There has been controversy around whether Aberdeen Terriers and Scottish Terriers are related or the same thing; some state that they are distinct and separate breeds. However, others believe that the name Scottish Terrier is for Aberdeen, Scotland, and that both of the Terriers are actually the same thing! The name Scottish Terrier is then a misnomer for Aberdeen Terriers.

Generally speaking, there are no more Aberdeen Terriers around today or they are actually Scottish Terriers. The Aberdeen Terrier is indeed a rare, and unique specie of terriers.
