Abort Taxpayer Funded Abortion

Patrick G. Whalen
Political commentary is not my particular forte, but this topic is due much consideration. Abortion is too often thought of merely as a political subject and is regularly treated with the bias of dollars and cents. What many fail to recognize in this debate is that, if reduced to mere dollars and cents, abortion costs us much more than most people consider.

Let's for a moment consider our growing deficit and the bankrupting systems of medicare and social security. According to census figures from 1970, the aging population is growing at a faster rate than the younger generation that the government depends upon to fund such social programs. In fact, Abortions have cost the United States at least 49,551,703 taxpaying citizens since 1973. These missing persons would have created demand for products and services, created and filled jobs, produced goods and payed billions in taxes to support the growing call for social services, not to mention have babies themselves which would further broaden the taxpaying population.

There is no doubt that abortion as a topical issue creates a great degree of emotion and moral conundrum. However true this may be, can we, as a nation, continue to afford ourselves the luxury of personal choice and comfort over security and sustainability?

In the current economy, workers are devastated financially by companies that decide to fire employees, yet expect the companies continue to expect their product lines to expand and revenues increase. This does seem to be the current mode of thought in our national government, but who is going to be there to pay the bills when this generation comes of age to receive social services?

My heart does go out to those women who become pregnant due to sexual assault and rape and the mental or emotional turmoil that extends from such events. I also understand that the life of mothers and/or the fetus may come under question and extremely difficult decisions have to be made. Unfortunately, it seems, that the national trend towards self-centeredness continues. While women claim a right to their own bodies, they often neglect the rights of the very body within them.

I am, as I expect the reader is, thankful that our mothers chose to take us to term and allow us the opportunity to grow, age and thrive. There are so many other options available today than there were in the days of Roe vs Wade. Unwed mothers are not as shunned as they once were and countless couples are in line to adopt a precious child.

It is encouraging to note that the abortion rate is continuing a downward trend, but the deaths of millions of babies are still occurring every year. Morals and beliefs aside from the discussion, the mere financial cost of using current public dollars to reduce the ability to grow future public dollars will produce dire consequences that a shrinking population will find very difficult to overcome.
