Say it loud say it proud! Yes we need to stop treating abortion like a dirty word. Millions of women have had abortions, but apparently what we need is abortion pride. Just this morning I was listening to an NPR segment on the parents of teen age parents. Naturally, when parents called in to talk about their hapless teenagers, the subject of choice arose time and again. What I found deeply disturbing, is the verbal gymnastics these parents used to avoid using the dreaded "A" word abortion. One woman told the story of how her daughter got pregnant and how she chose to keep the baby etc. The woman recounted how she told her daughter that she would not raise the baby for her and so on and so forth, spinning what was apparently supposed to be some sort of deep moral lesson about responsibility or something. Before I dozed off listening to her she started talking about how her daughter was given a choice. The woman said she was given "three" choices apparently abortion, adoption, or motherhood. But you could just hear from the nervous tone of her voice she didn't dare say what those choices were out loud since obviously one was abortion and she was just too squeamish about it to say it. Another example among countless examples is the piece on abortion by rapper Jean Grey where she raps about how "troubling" her abortion experience was "I can't finish this" she quotes in the lyrics as if choked up. Apparently, some how, it's hip to be troubled to the point of fainting dead away by a simple medical procedure. However you never hear the other side.
Countless women who've had abortions would laugh at this or even regard it as a little mentally unstable. Let's start hearing their stories! I'm sick and tired of hearing what a "grave decision" abortion is, when the actual medical risk is so low. The only thing grave about the decision would be a moral aspect and how often are women upset because of guilt mongering anti choice con artists rather than any feelings of there own? If your pro choice, it's no big deal, it all boils down to whether you want a child or not at the time, nothing more. What we need is an abortion pride symbol for women who have had abortions with no more upset than getting a tooth filled. Women who would do it again and again if need be. I guarantee you , they are out there, in numbers, and as fed up as I am with all this walking on eggs about abortion.
Why isn't there a symbol? Gays wear pride rings to fight back against stigma and bigotry every day and by all accounts it's working! We need proud, even defiant abortion patients to start getting out there and put the word out in solidarity. The Red Hat society has red hats for members fifty and over and pink hats for under fifty members, what about pink pins, rings, ear rings etc. for abortion patients and pink and white for supporters and like minded? Yes maybe a little pink letter "C" for choice? A scarlet letter "A" for abortion might also be a nice way to throw it mockingly back in the terrorist's faces. Maybe a little white or red and white letter A for supporters and like minded? Men could even wear the latter. It would be a bold and straight forward, no bones about it, way of saying Yes I've had a totally guilt free abortion! Let's fight back against the stigma, and let's face it, terror that's been foisted on us by the doctor murdering, bomb throwing "pro life" community.
If gays can face up to a segment of society that wants to crucify them on rail fences by wearing pride rings and rainbow flag pins in the face of this bigotry and filthy murder foisted on them , why can't abortion patients and supporters proudly step up and take a stand against bigotry, ignorance and murder? As soon as I finish this article I'm calling some friends at Planned Parenthood with a suggestion.

Post a CommentI'm actually with you on this. But we guys just can't (not won't or don't want to...can't...as in biologically) understand what a woman goes through when facing this decision.
