Abortion; Why Government Legislation Would Be Irresponsible

It's the Woman's Right to Choose!

There are a number of reasons why the ethics of abortion should be handled at the family level and far removed from governmental legislation. First and foremost is the fact that abortion, itself, is a feminine issue. Albeit, it takes two to become pregnant in the first place, when it comes down to those most affected by the decision of abortion, it is without a doubt the woman. Considering the field of politics is heavily one sided, leaning to the masculine side, allowing our government to mandate any legislation regarding the morality of abortion is irresponsible.

History has shown, and the present continues to show, the responsibility of child rearing begins and ends with the woman. Men who take part in raising their children play an important part in the lives of their children. But lets face the facts, in more cases than none, when a couple is separated; the children continue to live with the woman. In our society, the man's responsibility is to provide the financial support and stability, but the nurturing of the child through childhood until adulthood is the primary responsibility of the mother.

With the raising of children and their mental and physical well-being highly dependent on the mother, it is adamant that the woman makes the decision to take on motherhood. If she is not eager for the responsibilities involved in raising a child or children, than she should not be forced into it. Abortion should be a viable choice.

You might argue that she shouldn't get pregnant if she doesn't want to have children, correct? But accidents do happen to those who have chosen to forgo the childrearing years. And for others, they may have become victims of rape, and suffered an involuntary and many times repugnant form of pregnancy.

And what about adoption you ask? Although a viable means of placing the child into a loving home where the child is nurtured and loved, adoption does not curtail the nine months of pregnancy. These nine months for someone who has been raped, is not only a tragic time, it is also a time of mental anguish. Imagine trying for a healthy pregnancy when the pregnant mother, herself, is not well.

The point forthcoming is that no matter the reason behind the decision to continue a pregnancy or undergo an abortion, the complexity of this decision does not lend itself to governmental policing. It is far too personal and far too important a decision to be thrown around amongst mostly those who have no significant attachment to the decision's outcome. Abortion should remain a viable means to terminate an unwanted pregnancy.
