About Arizona

The "New" Law

Jose Zuniga
Once again, the U.S.'s lapse in memory resurfaces. It's called Arizona. For more details contact your nearest Mexican. When was the first occasion when the U.S. blamed Mexicans for their economic issues? No one remembers the great Depression? That's ironic because the current economy is turning into a greater depression. The result of the market crash brought about new laws, which blamed Mexicans (as they are being blamed now).

However, at least, in those days, laws preferred not to be cryptically mundane. They called it simply "The Deportation Acts". Of course, years later, the U.S., on serious hardship for their need for cheap labor, called on the Mexicans to "bail them out" and do the hard work. No one minded that part of it. (Bracero Program, anyone, anyone?) Yet as soon as the economy dipped by a few points, Operation Wetback. Like Roberto Flores (Lil' Rob) said in his Chicano rap song, "Shh, no digas nada, bounce like a Chevy Impala." Isn't that what Arizona is saying, Bounce with your chevy impalas back to Mexico?Nope. They want us to leave the Chevy's in Arizona. Oh, well, like Ralphie May said, "Hey, that's fucked up."

Who was affected the last time? Families in the 1920's were torn apart. Some came home to find their mothers couldn't return from Mexico or their brothers and sisters lost somewhere in the dangerous streets of Tijuana. No one wanted to talk about what the U.S. did. No one wanted to talk about whose fault it was. They just wanted to say, "Oh, shit, I guess my house belongs to a white guy now. Here's your keys, buddy." And, in a time like this, as Homer Simpson said, "the term apology gets tossed around a lot these days." More like the term get out of my country, wetback, que no? At least, you were frank in the 1950's. You knew what you wanted to do. In today's society, politicians can't find enough words to hide their true intentions. It's not only hypocritical but its also bad Public Relations. Didn't' they know that the more they hide something, the more people pursue it? I guess a degree from online universities can get you into office now.

For those of you who aren't Mexican, we like to term the lack of respect for Mexicans that the U.S. likes to impose on us every ten years or so as Historical Amnesia. Usually, things will go well for a while, as they did during the Amnesty program of the 1980's. Then, some doosh will look back and say, "Oh, yea, the Mexicans. Simple, just send them back." Lots of good that did the U.S. It created drug and human trafficking (both very profitable positions for criminals and the U.S. mind you) and left a bitter resentment toward Americans by a very oppressed society.

Recently, L.A. officials wanted to get rid of "La Placita Olvera". You have Little Tokyo which is twice its size and consists of ultimately more stores and locations yet this small half-block area with twenty or so small shops (five or six which are eateries) gets targeted. But no, there's no rascism involved with it. L.A. Is just trying to save money, right? Didn't the government do something similar?Market Crash. Mexicans out. Market Bad. Mexicans out. Election Season. Mexicans Out. High yielding crops. Mexicans in? Oh, no, wait, we'll just ship out some people from China, that's cool. They might not like the taco truck, though. Ya that could be a problem. It'll be a rice truck now.

Finally, we have the political engine which runs the whole thing. Well, I was going to punish those in charge for saying bad things about those not in charge but Rage Against the Machine has it covered. I can't believe they remember that we're here but not what was done to us by them. Every time they try to kick us out, they going to put an internet border, too? You must be this much of a geek to enter. How about a height border? Oops, not tall enough. Hair maybe? Not blonde enough? I guess they will bring about another measure to kick us out in the future. They could just say, "What's Amnesia really mean, I mean really?" Right? Que no? You could deport Mexicans but you won't deport drugs and drug dealers? Is there something wrong here?
