About Haiti: How Hard is it to Give?

Haiti's Been Hit Hard. What's Going on with You?

Donald Pennington
How hard is it to give to Haiti? You've just come in from another day's labors. That was two hours ago, really, that you got off work. Since then you've ran the kids around, checked on Dad, dropped two kids off and ran to the store. Still, there's supper to cook. So, when you see the commercial on TV all you think is "They keep playing that same message." You're tired and annoyed.

Then, in the corner of your eye, you see the image come over the television screen, from the news coverage, of a ten year old boy clutching his Mother. The shot switches to a man, whom you'll never meet who just lost all he owned in the world, along with his son and wife. Really. Couldn't you text just one message to donate $5 for the sake of all like that young boy?

How hard is it to give to Haiti? You've been fired. This bites. That new lease was just signed two months ago! Now, just to make sure you and her even have a roof over your head-in this economy, you'll probably need to go to the dept of public welfare. Food stamps suck too. They never give enough and all you can buy with them is...literally...just food. Why did this have to happen now?

Yes. Why did you have to fall upon the safety net of food stamps and public assistance, while so many have nothing to eat, the very morning the earthquake turned their world upside down? Have you had to suffer such an indignity while the people of Haiti were starving so long ago? Is $5 really that much to spare?

How hard is it to give to Haiti? Are the constant pleas for help wearing thin? Are you finding the 'round-the-clock, requests for donations aggravating? "Somethingsomething Haiti," everywhere you look? Does it almost make you want to disconnect from society while all of this blows over?

Before you turn it all off please consider that while you're there annoyed for all of the messages asking you to help Haiti...you're being annoyed from within your living room couch, on your laptop. Most of the folks who've just lost everything they had to hope for in life, never really had much more than a tar and paper shack anyway. You and I (as the author) could probably stand to drop a couple pounds.

So please disturb yourself, and just send these people $5. Your local Red Cross is always taking donations. Wyclef Jean is operating a texting program. Organize something within your own church. Be one of the volunteers for just one community program sending relief packages somewhere. We Americans are fortunate for our difficulties. If all of us just do a little bit, then together, we'll help Haiti rebuild.

Seriously, ask yourself: How much trouble is it, in the long run, to give just a tiny bit of money to Haiti?

It's so great to see people helping! I don't have extra money to donate - I barely pay my bills most months as it is! Glad I could write. I definitely don't mind writing to help donate! I can do that!

I can't remember if I already commented on this. I made a donation through the American Red Cross website, easy as pie. No one should be ashamed that they can "only" give $10 (or whatever)--every little bit adds up fast when we all contribute to the same cause.

Any of our problems seem miniscule compared to what those poor people are going through. Give up fountain drinks or some other luxury for a week, and give to those that would love just to have a piece of bread and some clean water. Excellent submission. It really makes us realize how good we have it.

Someone always is worse off than you... You really put things into perspective. Excellent piece!

You're so right. I was just pondering this today, after spending all last year bemoaning our financial situation. I live in a palace compared to what those people live in! I have food and clothes and a roof and a nice comfortable bed and TV and a computer (taking a breath). If people thought of it this way, they'd be shamed into giving! The Bible says what you give you will get back tenfold. It might not be in money, however, but you'll get it back some way.

    I know...typos all over. I'll live.

We all texted in my household and gave to Yele Haiti. I trust Wyclef to make sure the donations count! It was not hard to do at all. I know we get busy, but we are so fortunate in this country and to turn a deaf ear is hardening of the heart!

Re: Bridget Ilene Delaney The Lutheran World Relief (LWR) texting is mentioned in my Help Haiti article, as well as how it works - http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2599531/help_haiti_many_ways_to_help.html Thanks little Lousiana chickie.

This charity was just brought up to me as being dependable. Feel free to investigate them. http://www.hrfhaiti.org/earthquake.html

I have no idea what Wyclef Jean is. Lutheran World Relief has a texting donation of $10, too.
