The Maltese only comes in white color but may have cream colored or light yellow ears, although it is not desirable for AKC show standards. They will normally weigh between 3 and 7 pounds, which places them in the toy group. The fur is silky with no under coat and is non shedding. Grooming is daily in show dogs who will have to have floor length fur. Many kept strictly as pets will have a clipped cut on the body for easier grooming and cleanliness. They are also notorious for under eye tear stains like many purebreed light colored dogs and the severity will vary and depend on different factors. The nose is dark and prone to changing to a light brown or pink during cold weather, but will darken again during warmer weather and is harmless and nothing to worry about. The teeth meet evenly in an edge to edge bite and their bones are very fragile and small especially in the legs.
This pet generally enjoys good health but will need their teeth brushed regularly to prevent potential health problems. Maltese bond very closely to humans and can tend to be overly dependant if pampered too much. They will require a bit of attention! They will thrive on attention. The Maltese will be great companions to carry along with you. If other pets of any breed live in the household, that's okay because Maltese get along with other dogs very well. So of course they will be easy to socialize. They do need training like any pet. They don't need a lot of space and actually prefer closed in places such as a fenced in yard. They will make fine apartment pets. Most will not be prone to wander too far from their owners or homes. Of course they have different personalities and will need to be supervised. They are fearless little dogs and may get themselves in trouble if not watched and protected. The Maltese is a very trusting breed. They really seem to enjoy games that involve running, such as games of chase. So, in closing, they don't require alot of exercise or space. They love the family deeply, love to be pampered, love running, do require some grooming and are a healthy breed that will get along with other pets.
