About Outdoor Lighting Fixtures

Owning a house is a whole new experience. Until recently, the most outdoor space I've "owned" have been small, under-utilized apartment balconies. Whatever the case may be, no matter what type of outdoor space you have, you'll find that you require some type of lighting. Fortunately, outdoor light fixtures don't have to be a hassle-but always be sure that your chosen fixtures are approved for outdoor use.

Outdoor Wall Sconces

Outdoor wall sconces are perfect for illuminating entryways into the home. In fact, an outdoor wall sconce can make a home feel more welcoming to friends and families. Plus, most sconces are reasonably priced and you can get a set of two for around $100.00 (though some high quality outdoor sconces may cost significantly more.)

Flood Lights

Flood lights are generally used as security lighting for an outdoor space, often in a backyard. Many times, flood lights are motion activated, meaning that when someone walks past the sensor, the lights come on, flooding the area with light. Previously, flood lights could cost a pretty penny to run, but today, many outdoor flood lights are energy efficient and also brighter than previously used incandescent lights.

Outdoor Ceiling Lights

Outdoor ceiling light fixtures can be used in gazebos, covered patios, 3-season rooms and more. They provide adequate lighting and are safe for use in outdoor locations (but to be safe, always be sure to check that your chosen light is outdoor-use approved prior to shelling out any cash for the fixture.) Like with indoor ceiling light fixtures, outdoor light fixtures come in a plethora of styles and sizes; and many are energy efficient.

Solar Powered Lights

Solar powered lights are great because aside from the initial cost, they do not cost a dime. They run entirely off of solar power and can illuminate walkways, driveways, outdoor landscaping and more. Plus, many can last for several hours (with some lasting as long as 6 hours or more.)

Outdoor Chandeliers

A chandelier? Outside? It's true! Many companies are starting to produce outdoor chandeliers, which can add a touch of elegance to any gazebo or outdoor porch. Plus, the outdoor versions are often just as beautiful (if not more) than any indoor chandelier. Just be sure that the chandelier you choose is safe for outdoor use, as per the manufacturer's recommendations.

Outdoor Lamps

If you have a screened-in porch (or even an open-air porch,) then you may have considered lamps for the space for evenings outside with a glass of wine and a good book (or whatever strikes your fancy.) When shopping for an outdoor lamp, you can expect to pay slightly more than you would for a traditional indoor lamp. However, keep in mind that it's unsafe to bring an indoor lamp into the outdoors, so always use lamps that are safe for use outdoors, as there are elements that the lamp can become exposed to that would not occur normally indoors.

Post Mounted Lights

Light posts, or post mounted lights, are great for areas where you may only need a little bit of occasional light outdoors. There are a plethora of choices when it comes to light post fixtures, so it's easy to match the lamp post fixture to your style of home as well as the different outdoor fixtures around your home's exterior.
