About the Planet Saturn

Marie M. Daniels
Here we have an elementary level educational report on the planet Saturn. Saturn is the sixth planet away from the sun, and the second largest planet in the solar system. Galileo first spotted Saturn's rings in the year 1610.

WHAT ARE SATURN'S SATELLITES?

The satellite Cassini launched in 2004. It is a man made satellite which takes pictures of Saturn and it's moons and send them back to earth. There are others like it. Voyager II launched in 1981. Voyager launched in 1980. Pioneer 11 performed a "flyby" of Saturn in 1979.

WHAT IS SATURN MADE OUT OF?

As far as we know, Saturn does not have a surface. Saturn is called a "gas giant". This means that it is a big planet that is made of gas. It is believed that the core is compound liquid rock. Over the core there is a layer of liquid hydrogen and some helium. Saturn is the only planet in our Solar System that is less dense than water.

WHAT IS THE WEATHER ON SATURN?

Saturn always has high winds. It has a great white spot, which is believed to be a storm in the atmosphere. Every 27-30 years, it is believed that the storm becomes active. Saturn winds rip the storm apart. Summer in the northern hemisphere comes every 30 years. Imagine only having summer come only two or three times during your life.

WHAT ARE SATURN'S RINGS?

Saturn's rings are made out of rocks and ice chunks. The rocks and ice can range from little particles up to pieces as big as a house. The "E" Ring is the outer ring. It is the largest in radius encompassing the planet. The rings are approximately 220 yards thick except for the "A" ring and the "C" ring which are a bit smaller.

HOW MANY MOONS DOES SATURN HAVE?

Saturn has 60 confirmed moons, with a few more that have yet to be confirmed. The largest moon of Saturn is named Titan, which is larger in size than the planet Mercury. Titan is the second largest moon in the solar system to one of Jupiter's moons. The moon Titan was named for the Greek mythology deity Titans.

Saturn is a planet with an interesting history. Saturn has a unique weather system and has been watched for many generations. Saturn is made of many different parts. It is a planet with no solid core. Saturn is mysterious and has been watched in the skies for almost four hundred years. Many of the things scientists think they know about Saturn are guesses. One day we hope to send man to Saturn to find out what it is really like.
