Abraham Lincoln Birthday: Abe Lincoln was a Great Man

Stacey Doyle
Abraham Lincoln birthday is something my children discuss after school. They recall the Abraham Lincoln birthday and think of Abe Lincoln as a great man. As we question our political officials' intentions today, it feels good to celebrate the Abraham Lincoln birthday by remembering what made Abe Lincoln great.

The Abraham Lincoln birthday was on February 12, 1809 in Kentucky. Abe Lincoln died on April 15, 1865 in Washington, D.C. Abe Lincoln served as the 16th President of the United States from 1861 to 1865 when he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at age 56.

Abe Lincoln lead the United States through the American Civil war, preserved the Union and ended slavery. Abe Lincoln started as a country lawyer, Illinois state legislator and a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1845 to 1847. Before becoming President, Abe Lincoln unsuccessfully ran for U.S. Senate twice.

The Abraham Lincoln birthday reminds us of the Emancipation Proclamation signed in 1863 and subsequent passage of the Thirteenth Amendment to Constitution six. After making progress and abolishing slavery, Abe Lincoln was the first United States president to be assassinated. My children admire Abe Lincoln for ending the Civil War and getting rid of slavery. Scholars agree and continually rank Abe Lincoln as one of the greatest U.S. Presidents.

Abe Lincoln quotes prove his wisdom and ability to convey important ideas. Check out these Abe Lincoln quotes in celebration of the Abraham Lincoln birthday:

"A house divided against itself cannot stand."

"All I am or can be, I owe to my angel mother."

"A friend is one who has the same enemies as you have."

"Allow the president to invade a neighboring nation, whenever he shall deem it necessary to repel an invasion, and you allow him to do so whenever he may choose to say he deems it necessary for such a purpose - and you allow him to make war at pleasure."

"Am I not destroying my enemies when I make friends of them?"

"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."
