'Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter' Movie to Release in 3D in 2012
Lincoln to Slay Vampires in a Theater Near You
According to a report from Deadline.com, executives at the Fox studio impressed the movie's director Timur Bekmambetov and producer Tim Burton with a meeting that included bloody footprints in the hallways, banners advertising the movie, and a Confederate soldier playing Taps. Sony, Universal, Paramount and Summit were all in fierce competition with Fox over the rights to release the highly anticipated movie, and it appears Fox's enthusiasm has won them the project.
Seth Grahame-Smith wrote the screenplay for the movie adaptation based on his own novel Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Grahame-Smith also wrote the bestselling Pride and Prejudice and Vampires, which sparked the recent trend of novels based on classic literature, re-imagined in the horror or sci-fi genres (publisher Quirk Books has released Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters, Jane Slayre, and Android Karenina all in 2009 and 2010).
Director Timur Bekmambetov and producer Tim Burton used their own money to buy the options for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter early in 2010.
The novel received mixed reviews and caused controversy with some readers, as it depicts the notion of most Confederates as vampires who feed off slaves. Some critics dismissed the novel as too gimmicky, yet the idea of Abraham Lincoln as a vampire hunter is a high-concept idea, one that is perhaps much better suited to film. A movie starring our 16th president slaying vampires will likely attract fans of the novel, as well as Tim Burton enthusiasts.
Early reports from Deadline and Variety say 'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter' will release in 2012 in 3D. Production is currently set to begin in March 2011 with an estimated budget around $69 million.
