The Benefits of Having Your Own Web Server
One of the challenges of having your own website is finding the right host. You want a web host that's affordable. But you also want one that's good. Problem is, there are all sorts of horror stories about "cheap" web hosts and the more expensive alternatives.
Running your website from your own web server installed on your own computer takes care of that hassle.
What Is Abyss Web Server?
Abyss Web Server is a program that installs a web server on your computer. From this web server, you can run your own website, sharing it with others online. Abyss Web Server works with many different operating systems, including Microsoft Windows, Mac, Linux, and FreeBSD.
While doing something like installing a web server on your own computer might seem impossible for anyone but a computer expert, you don't have to be an expert to use the program. Having some computer knowledge helps, but Abyss Web Server was designed to be relatively easy to use.
There are two versions of Abyss Web Server. The free version is completely free, with no limits of any kind. The pain, or Professional, version comes with more features, and is for more advanced users with more demanding needs.
Abyss Web Server comes with a User's Guide that will take you step by step through the process of setting up your web server. Depending on how much computer knowledge you already have, you can have your website up and running pretty quickly.
The Cons of Having Your Own Web Server
There are all sorts of pros to running your website from your own computer. But there are some cons that you should keep in mind.
First, while Abyss Web Server was designed to by relatively easy to use, unless you have some basic (and not so basic) computer knowledge, setting up your own web host will be challenging.
Also, while finding a good web host can be a chore, once you do find one, there are lots of things you don't have to worry about because they are taken care of for you. Using your own server means having to take care of all of these things yourself. So if you dislike have to deal with a lot of little details, Abyss Web Server might not be for you.
With most web hosts, a lot of extra stuff comes with the package, like PHP, MySQL, Fantastico, etc. And these are things you won't necessarily get with Abyss Web Server, which means downloading and installing new programs (many of which won't be free).
And security issues are always a concern. And, using your own web server means being extra diligent about possible security problems.
Still, after you consider all of the pros and cons, you might decide that the pros of having your own web server outweigh the cons. And, if you do, Abyss Web Server is just what you need.
