Astrophysics, is this a science? In this field practitioners use terms like red shift, blue shift, white dwarfs, red giants and black holes. So if it is a science it is a pretty colorful one. They also use terms like the Hubble constant to determine if we are moving towards or way from the universal center. At that center, many, many years ago in a place far, far away, astrophysicists theorize there was a big bang.
Metaphysics, is this a science? Metaphysicians ponder problems of universals and our place in the universe. Also known as natural philosophy, metaphysics deals with colors plus crystals, time, space and occultism. Sir Isaac Newton was a natural philosopher.
Okay, what about Astrology? These guys use star charts and planetary orbits to predict future events. Depending on the age of an individual and the current position of the planet and stars the probability of an outcome can be determined. There are variables that make these outcomes changeable so the individual can alter future outcome with present actions.
Here's a tough one, Meteorology? These people use the position of more local heavenly bodies to predict rises, sets, highs and lows. They also use things like isobars, humidity, highs and lows to predict the weather. Some have become so proficient that they can predict the weather seven days in advance when sufficient pressure is applied by their editors. Groups of meteorologists can even get together and predict weather pattern up to one hundred years in advance.
Metallurgy may be a strange one for you. Metallurgists use phrases like hexagonally close packed, shear strength, tensile strength and terms like alloys, hardness, brittleness, plasticity and annealing. Metallurgists have tools like Rockwell hardness meters, x-rays and ultra sound to test things. Metallurgists try to change things bauxite into Aluminum (or Aluminium if you prefer).
Alchemy you may have heard of. Alchemists use most of the same terms and phrases that the metallurgists use. Just like the metallurgists the alchemists try to take things like lead and change it into gold. Alchemy combines elements of metallurgy, chemistry, spiritualism physics and astrology.
Now class, your assignment is to leave a comment on which of the above is truly a science. For extra credit you can pick out one or two that once was considered a science. You have thirty minutes starting now. Eyes on your own computers please.

Post a CommentP.S. Meterology needs to tighten up or they may be the next psuedo-science. The seventh day of a seven day forecast is less than 20% accurate. Not good science! Tell your editor to kiss your butt and stick to science! When did we start seeing seven day forecasts? When USA Today started I think. New paper and new scientific methodology?
Okay, it has nothing to do with arrogance. Everything todo with scientific method. Astrophysics, metallurgy and meterology are sciences. Astrology, and alchemy were parts of metaphysics before the formation of scientific methodology. Astrology has been the most abused. Horoscopes have been proven as BS so many times it is crazy. Metaphysics and to a lesser point alchemy have been abused. So the science community wonders why Americans don't know science. Maybe your palmist can answer the question.
Very good shepherd. I can't give out the answers just yet, but you may be on to something.
I find it more than a little arrogant to decide on behalf of humanity which one is a "real" science. All of the above, yes all, have measurable results, which I suppose would make them all sciences. You're looking for the answer astrophysics, but the rest are all valid on their own levels without having to fit into a smaller mold of criteria. The best use of science, at least to me, is to seek answers to questions that have not yet been answered. All of the above practices do this. Btw, alchemy is nowhere near limited to the gold question, and it gave rise to the modern study of chemistry.
