AC and the Frustratingly Immovable Ads!

John Smither
This week on AC has been more than a little frustrating. We have had to endure the glitch of a few days ago, where nothing being published was being announced to all those subscribers eagerly awaiting your freshly published articles. The break down recently of the system that prevented emails to all our readers meant very few PV's for a day or two, resulting also in a definite drop in comments left on said articles.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy writing on AC, I will praise it whenever I can. I am generally happy with the service offered, although one recurring complaint that I feel still needs to be addressed is the one of placing the advertisement in the center of the article. This ad on the opening page will not position itself correctly, always covering up the last few lines of text on the first page. Now one way to correct this is to go to page two of the article (where the ad is always positioned in the correct place), and then click back to page one. For some strange reason this inconvenience to your reading of the article is rectified by completing this routine.

The biggest complaint from this writer is if the article only has the one page of text i.e. poems, and with this past month being poetry month many have been. Shorter poems are ok as the text is fully visible, but longer ones and the last few lines are obscured by the annoying ad that appears impossible to move with it only being one page of text. Now I realise that the advertisements are an important part of the essential revenue for AC, but surely they should not be positioned in such a way as to be over the top of text in this frustrating manner for us writers.

I realise that a site like AC has a few problems from time to time but this particular glitch seems to have been running since the change in format a few weeks ago.

Source:- personal opinion.

I had often felt that I had a book inside me ready to be written (many of us have I know), well it has been but now I need to get it published. Until recently I never knew I could write poems, that is my nex...  View profile

John, thanks for the suggestion to go on to p 2 & switch back. I know weird tricks can work sometimes. I click go to a 2nd or 3rd page, etc & often get the white page saying this content is not available. I mutter BS (the exact curse may be key here) & hit the Back arrow & try again. Usually works. At least they fixed the problem that used to drive me to hair-tearing madness. When we got the New Look in Jan (?), the freakin' ad would jump in front of the photo the instant we clicked the tiny box in the upper left corner of the picture. Not only did it cover the lower half of the enlarged pic, it covered the caption & prevented us from clicking on photos 2, 3, etc, or even SEEING if there were more pics! Now we click the tiny box in upper left corner, & the whole pic shows over the title. The ad is still there, but not hiding the pics. We're still missing a lot of notices when new articles go up, though!

I realize the page-one ads are often an eyesore, but page one is so much more important that page two to both the advertiser and AC. If a reader looks at my contend, out of curiosity, the ad(s) on page one will be seen. If that same reader decides my article isn't worth pursuing, the ad(s) on the following pages will not be seen. Huge difference.

I thought I was the only one that wasn't getting email notices. I guess it happens to every site at some point in time. I am still waiting for NeoItems to come back up after their "four hour renovation"

Yikes...the problems have been a bit overwhelming and the adds drive me nuts!

Yes, John, re your email (fuller reply soon). I've published quite a bit recently, but seems erratic what is showing up in notification emails, so I'm looking at people's source pages now. Re poetry. I hate it when the last line is pushed away by an ad next to it!

You said it! Thank you for venting for me.

Yea the glitch in getting approvals was annoying. AC hides as no way to get a hold of these folks or even argue with the out of touch editorial staff.

I don't seem to have problems with the ads but hearing others do makes me wonder how many people blow off the site.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. Maybe a shaded background behind the ads or a border around them might help - and why not move them to the lower right hand corner of the article or poem above the other article listings instead of the 4th line down on the left hand side where it interferes with the flow of the words.

    Definitely!

Yes, it certainly does wreak havoc on poetry. Some of the lines get lost and jumbled.
