I started writing for Associated Content at the end of March in 2007. I had some free time on my hands, and I had always wanted to write. I was writing stories as far back as kindergarten, and I had always wanted to do more with my writing.
In March of 2007, I had just purchased a new computer. I wanted to pursue some interests I had in singing and photography, and bought the computer on a payment plan with no interest for the first year. So, given the fact that I had no extra money, I had to come up with some way to pay the computer off in a year to avoid paying that additional interest.
I had signed up for an email about travel writing. I love to travel and this would be my dream job. I got an email that talked about Associated Content. I figured I would give it a try. I wrote a few articles, and then waited to see what would happen. The first article got a $6 upfront payment offer, and the rest did okay as well. So, my interest jumped a bit. I then decided that I would pay for the computer writing for Associated Content.
The way that I made my success happen was to set a goal for myself that I would make enough money to pay the computer payment each month. This was almost $200, and I have to say it wasn't easy! I was working at my full time job, with a lot of time spent commuting as well. I didn't quite make all of the payments, but I did come close. I made a little over $1000 by the end of 2007, including money for my page views.
Once the computer was paid for, my writing didn't stop. I set a goal of becoming clout level ten, which happened for me on May 11, 2008, my boyfriend's birthday! My next goal was for a million page views and 500 total articles by the end of May 2009. I have been working hard to achieve this, with over 400 articles written now and 540,000 page views. I write some of my articles for page views and some that I think will get upfront payment consideration.
The article writing now pays for my gas and food each week. My full time job doesn't really cover all of my bills. So, I stay motivated to meet my goals because I have to! I think financial need is one way to achieve success writing, as well as goal setting and not deviating from the goals.
For new content producers starting out, set goals and have a need for your writing. One thing to watch for is becoming tapped out or stressed out. If you write articles for days and weeks on end, it's going to get tiring. Make sure you take a break when you get cues that you are getting overly stressed. You'll need to figure out what your cues are. Don't give up on your writing dream, because it can become a reality!
Many of my friends and family members read my articles, and this helps them get to know me better. My articles are all about things I am interested in, so reading them tells a lot about me.
Writing for Associated Content, for me, has helped me financially. It has also helped me to create the story of Me. And that's a story worth telling!

Post a CommentThanks for sharing. You are an inpiration for me.
Nice, good advice. Thanks!
Great job meeting your goals and keeping up with them! I, too, hope to set goals for myself, and thank you for the suggestion to other content producers!
It makes me happy to see that you've done so well.
I loved reading about your AC journey... very inspiring! I actually consider writing for AC a guilty pleasure since I would rather do this than the myriad other tasks that await me. Of course, I have a ways to go before I hit the half million PVs you have achieved : )
Great story, Christi!
