Ramon noodles have never been a part of my dietary scene. After reading articles here on AC I have actually bought some of these gourmet shunned pasta packs. Worse, I have actually eaten the noodles who's reputation is rivaled only by macaroni and cheese in a box.
I realized that I was in trouble three days ago while creating a chicken stir-fry in the trusty wok. Not realizing that I was out of rice I was left with only one starch option for the tasty main course. The dreaded Ramon noodles. Not having my glasses to read the directions, I crumbled the noodles in the stir-fry and added ½ cups of chicken broth and steamed the impoverished college student staple to life. Luckily I did not realize there was a seasoning pack in the noodle package.
After the noodles had steamed, I served the questionable offering. We actually enjoyed the meal. We, Michele and I sat silent after the meal looking at the empty plates. "What have we become?", Michele asked rhetorically shaking her sad head. Then she stared me straight in the eye and said, "Never mention this to a soul!"
The next night I experimented with the noodles. Taking the wok again I started by dropping the noodles in the hot wok adding ¾ cups of chicken broth. Placing a sauce pan lid on the cooking noodles they steamed for three minutes then they were flipped to steam two minutes more. Two tablespoons of oil was added and the noodles stir-fried until they became slightly crisp yet blended with soft noodles.
The noodles were remove to a side plate and lean pork strips seasoned with salt, garlic and Adobo were stir-fried to caramelized perfection and removed to the same plate. Then a blend of broccoli and snow peas again with salt, garlic and Adobo were stir fried and the pork returned to the wok to join the veggies. Two tablespoons of corn starch blended with an equal amount of chicken broth was added to the wok mixture. With approximately ¾ cups more chicken broth and ¼ cup soy sauce a Chinese appearing sauce with a Cuban flare bubbled gently and the noodles were added to the mixture in the wok and blended in to form a Lo Mien of questionable heritage.
Again we ate in silence and stared at the cleaned plates. Both of us sure we would be social outcasts if the truth of our nefarious culinary ways should be told. Now we have to resort to wearing fake glasses with an equally fake mustache and nose when roaming the supermarket aisles.

Post a CommentI ate them as a young Airman low on cash. I thought they were good for me (please don't share MY secret)! I don't eat them much any more, but my son thinks they are sweet nectar from heaven... good grief...
DOmt noone bnetter say nothin bad about them noodles. I loves me some noodles. I got 4 kids and they will flat tear them up. They are really quite tasty and the kids like them becasue we let them start cooking their own at an early age. First they nuke em. then they boil em . I like that thay come home from school hit the cabinet cook their noodles up and I dont have to do it for them. Oh and how can you argue with six packs for $1.99. If it hadn't been for ramens Id a starved to the in school. It would have cut into my condom and beer money. That's no way to live if your in a college dorm

Ironic. I thought only I had that reciepe. Thanks. So much for opening that noodle restaurant I was dreaming of. :)
So funny!!!! My husband loves the darn things. So does my daughter. But I'm a gourmet chef so I just want to gag when I see them.
LOL Very interesting! :)
Great article, Captain! I'm so sick of Ramen noodles.
Vonnie- I had a bug experience with mine once when I was younger. Ick. I still eat them though. I am going to go read your story now!
Great article! We've actually cooked the noodles (in a little stir-fry sauce) and served with stir-fried chicken and veggies. Thanks for mentioning my article! :)
Okay, no promises college kids, but I might just have to write a few "Dorm Gormet" articles. I can adapt a lot of my wok recipes to say a "Fry Baby" or a hot plate. What do you think?
Very funny! But oh yeah are those noodles versatile! We make alot of meals with them at college of course!
