If you are shopping around for a traditional fencing or sword fighting school, then Academia Duellatoria is as real as it gets. Working with recently re-translated material from Italian, German and Spaniard sources, the masters have made this school an incredible and rare resource for individuals who wish to learn from those traditions. Much of their particular method comes from various ancient traditional schools, and at times employs the use of the "magical circle" described in the ancient Spanish text called "The Destreza." (This magical circle was briefly highlighted during a training scene in one of the recent remakes of the Zorro movies.)

Beginners receive all of the support necessary to become comfortable with their newly chosen endeavor, and that support continues for as long as it is necessary. In any physically or mentally challenging situation, most people quit once they reach as much disappointment and frustration as they can take, and they know that. In all of my years of martial arts training I have never met more patient and caring instructors. Academia Duellatoria is ideal for kids.

The classes have multiple instructors to respond to student needs, which is a pretty big deal in terms of what you get for your money. It is refreshing contrast to the one-teacher to thirty-student schools many of us have come to expect from martial arts training.

The school is reasonably priced, located in a really good place accessible by public transportation. The instructors there are the nicest people you will ever want to meet. They are friendly, treat students with respect, and without the snobbery that many newcomers experience in other schools. Students have flown from all over the United States to receive training from the instructors at Academia Duellatoria.

Academia Duellatoria has two locations. One in Beaverton, about 2.5 miles from Downtown. There you will find Jeff Richardson and Matthew Howden who started the school. The other school is in Phoenix, Oregon and is operated and managed by its third owner, John Czekala.
