Wow! That was the first expression out of my mouth when I saw Sandra Bullock's gorgeous gold gown. This beautiful dress evokes the classic look of Old Hollywood, and reminds me of a gown Jean Harlow or Hedy Lamar would have worn way back when. This is a very elegant ensemble, and Sandy's simple hairstyle and classic clutch bag completes the look magnificently. This is by far my favorite gown of the evening as it is both stylish and timeless.
Penelope Cruz
Pretty color, but a very forgetful and plain dress. The texture and bulk of this material actually reminds me of curtains, and the strange cut of the bodice gives Ms. Cruz a very lopsided look. This would have been a very beautiful dress if it didn't look like Ms. Cruz wrapped herself up in curtains.
Meryl Streep
Meryl Streep, the epitome of class, dons an outfit that is just that: classy. This simple white gown looks absolutely divine on Ms. Streep, and her gold platform heels provided a nice trendy contrast with the simple, timeless look.
Kate Winslet
Always classy and elegant, Ms. Winslet's beautiful silver satin gown with the tight, fitted bodice again evokes the look of classic Old Hollywood glamour. Since Ms. Winslet reminds me of a star from the golden age of Hollywood, she does this dress justice magnificently. This one is right behind Sandra Bullock's gold gown as being one of my two personal favorites of the evening.
Mo'Nique
This lovely breakout star looked very regal in a gorgeous blue gown trimmed with glittery silver accents, giving her look a flashy, yet tasteful appearance. Very pretty!
Oh my dear Sarah! What were you thinking? While the normally stylish Sarah always looks divine in anything she wears, this dress was a nightmare. The canary yellow color and shapeless cut was anything but flattering, and the silver trim and shoes just did not go well with it. I was actually quite disappointed, as Ms. Parker is one of my favorite style icons in Hollywood today.
Always known for her sexy, yet classy fashion sense, J.Lo's lovely gown did not disappoint. The sweet pink color of the dress was contrasted quite well with the more cutting edge style cut and shape, and in a way it sort of reminded me of a more toned down version of Lady GaGa's red carpet Grammy dress. This dress was very feminine and edgy at the same time, which Ms. Lopez can pull off quite well!
Charlize Theron
This would have been a beautiful choice, as the color and cut of the dress were magnificent, however those two flower prints on her bodice look a little, well, tacky! Oh Ms. Theron what were you thinking? Such a beautiful and talented lady certainly doesn't need to resort to a gimmick to get attention!
Beautiful! I love the royal blue color of this dress, as it compliments her tanned skin and blonde hair beautifully, and her sparkly diamond jewelry gives it that extra touch of 'Mariah'. Always the diva, Ms. Carey opted for a high cut slit in the front, accented by more jewels. Classy and flashy, certainly befitting for Mariah Carey!
Cameron Diaz
BEAUTIFUL! Maybe I'm just a sucker for sparkly golden gowns, but Ms. Diaz look simply fabulous in a strapless dress accented with tons of sparkly gold sequins and jewels. This dress reminds me of something Rita Hayworth would have worn in one of her technicolor musicals from the 1940s, a befitting choice for someone as beautiful and classic looking as Cameron Diaz.
Eh. Black gowns are always stylish, but like Penelope Cruz's gown, this one also reminds me of curtains. A simple, straighter cut would have looked much better, and Ms. Stewart was in dire need of some jewels to accent her dress.
Demi Moore
Oh dear! At first glance, I had to make sure this gown wasn't completely see through as the icky flesh color of the dress blended in with her own skin color a little too well. Also, don't get me started on those flamenco style ruffles or the bandaged look of her bodice. Eek!
Vera Farmiga
Hands down, the weirdest dress of the evening. While the color is lovely, the design is a little too kooky, and all those ruffles remind me of the dress my Happy Holidays Barbie from 1990 wore, only way more over the top. Yikes!
Zoe Saldana
In a tie with Vera Farmiga as the actress with the most kooky gown, Ms. Saldana's funky purple frock with the sparkly bodice and scary pom pom skirt is enough to give me nightmares. Everything about this dress is hideous, from the colors, fabric, cut, and everything in between. Such as shame really, as Ms. Saldana is simply gorgeous and could have done so much better!
Sigourney Weaver
A ravishing beauty as always, the classy Ms. Weaver looked simply regal in a simple red goddess gown tied with a black ribbon. Loved this one!
OK, I'm a little biased on this one. While I adore the lingerie 'underwear as outerwear' look, this choice was a little too MTV for the Oscars. While Ms. Cyrus looked adorable as always, the brassiere style bodice and petticoat-esque skirt would have been much more suited for a music awards ceremony, where looks can be a little more risque and playful. A fun and pretty dress, just worn to the wrong awards ceremony.
Diane Kruger
Oh good Lord! Haven't we seen enough 'wedding cake' style dresses in recent years? While I loved the colors of this one, the basic design was horrible, proving once again that avant garde simply does not work every time.
Maggie Gyllennhaal
How very nice...a beach towel worn as a dress! Maggie my dear, you are adorable, but this dress simply does not do you justice! The Hawaiian print and sarong style would have looked right in place at a luau, not the Oscars.
Rachel McAdams
Not bad. Certainly not one if the most dazzling dresses of the evening, but a very unique one. This dress has a very 1980s look and feel to it, and reminds me of a watercolor painting that would have hung in an office during the Reagan years. The full skirt was very pretty and fun and the strapless bodice gave it a nice modern edge without making it look dated.
Molly Ringwald
Speaking of the '80s, former teen queen Molly Ringwald showed up at the ceremony in a striking purple gown that complimented her fiery red hair beautifully. While I like the style and color of this dress on her, the big bangle cuff and funky gold brooch really weighed this dress down, and by that I mean it made it look more 'dressy casual' than 'dressy'. Some sparkly jewels would have been a much better choice.
As always, the stars showed up for Oscar Night in some fabulous (and not so fabulous) creations. For anything and everything Oscar related, be sure to visit this site for up to the minute information and pics of all the wonderful gowns!
