Seeking a vibrant smile (alignment of teeth) and magnificent bite dates back to 400 B. C.: "Hippocrates wrote about attempts made to straighten teeth." In the late part of the nineteen century, Dr. Edward Angle (Dentist 1) first introduced the concept of Malocclusion ("A malocclusion is a misalignment of teeth and / or incorrect relation between the teeth of the two dental arches. The upper arch is called the maxilla and the lower is called the mandible." 2) and occlusion (Relationship between the upper and lower teeth 3) in his published work regarding teeth. The foundation of Dr. Angle work along with his colleagues formulated a new sub field study of dentistry called orthodontics 4: Study and treatment of malocclusions (improper bites) may result because of irregular position of a tooth, dispositioning of the jaw opening and closing or both. 5 In 1900, Dr. Edward Angle and his colleagues established the American Association of Orthodontists. Members of the Association are dentists who have received additional education for 2 -3 years in the field of orthodonistry. Education in the field of orthodonistry includes usage of fixed and removable appliances (braces) in the specialty, treat and correct (reposition) alignment of teeth, redirect the growth of bones, and prevent malocclusion. 6 Modern day orthodontists offer patients cosmetically improved smile, aligned bite for improved chewing, reduce irregular wear on the teeth, and improve the patient's ability to breathe. 7 Unfortunately achieving an attractive smile wearing braces (estimated five million in the United States and Canada) may take a considerable amount of time or years. A new device called AcceleDent will shorten the time to enhance an orthodontic improved smile and bite. 8

Researchers from OrthoAccel Technologies (2555 Holly Hall, Suite 100 Houston, Texas 77054 - Email: info@orthoaccel.com9) and Dubravko Pavin, D. M., M. S. D., Ph. D, an associate professor in the Department of Orthodontics of the Health Science Center developed AcceleDent (8): Battery operated device which provides a constant vibration sensation to accelerate the process of orthodontic treatment allowing teeth to move and straighten faster and more effectively, during the time braces are worn. "Patients are instructed to place the device in their mouth (Stands four inches high with a wafer- thin mouthpiece 8) and bite down for 20 minutes a day during orthodontic treatment." 8 The AcceleDent reduces treatment time for wearing braces by fifty percent. 10

Clinical study of thirty-four patients ages 12 - 40 undergoing orthodontic treatment including necessary extractions and fitted braces (standard metal or plastic removable braces called invisalign 11), reduced their treatment time by a vibration home device use of the AcceleDent. The vibration of AcceleDent was barely noticeable and not uncomfortable. Late in 2009 the AcceleDent expected to be sold in United Kingdom. 8 "Representatives at OrthoAccel predict the AcceleDent will be marketed in the United States in late 2010." 11

Increasingly the popularity of cosmetic dentistry may further escalate by AcceleDent, wearing dental braces to achieve a better smile requires less time. Certainly, young adults who require braces will be happy to know, a new home device will shorten their orthodontic treatment

Researchers at the University of Illinois first discovered vibration accelerates bone re-modeling process. 10 Prior to the development of AcceleDent, vibration therapy provided health benefits: Astronauts during prolonged weightlessness stood on a light vibrating plate form for 10 - 20 minutes each day preventing the onset of muscle atrophy and bone loss mass.11 The therapy rehabilitates injuries, improve senior fitness, enhance muscle strength and increase hormone levels. 12

Consequentially patients may decide to use the home orthodontic AcceleDent beyond the recommended 20 minutes a day usage, achieve faster results: Unknown if harmful consequences may result.
