Accessories You Need to Get Audrey Hepburn's Movie Star Style

The Pen
Audrey Hepburn's style is synonymous with simplicity. With her turtlenecks, trench coats, and ballet flats Audrey's wardrobe appears timelessly stylish, but also functional and uncomplicated, which is why many modern women still want to dress like her. But Audrey was very much a movie star and she knew how to bring on the glamour to wow crowds when she needed to. Here are five accessories that she used to add extra drama and style to her look.

A Silk Scarf

A small scarf knotted around her neck was one of Audrey's main stand-bys when she wanted to add a bit of interest to a simple white blouse and skirt. Or when wearing a turtleneck and capris she'd wrap one around her head. She'd also use a long thin one as a belt.

To be like Audrey go for silk scarves in plain colors or those with pretty prints. But do avoid super long scarves with fringe, fraying, or other details that look too bohemian or distressed. Audrey was a movie star not a rock star.

Pearls

In the movie Breakfast At Tiffany's, Audrey's character Holly Golightly would have her breakfast in front of the window at Tiffany's, and in one of the most iconic scenes she wore a little black dress with a huge multi-strand pearl choker.

It was so impractical - who really does that? Yet it was so fabulously glamorous. Even though Holly isn't Audrey, Holly's wardrobe is synonymous with Hepburn's (Givenchy even designed the wardrobe with Audrey's input, so Holly's style was sort of an extension of Audrey's).

So to emulate them both, get an oversized pearl necklace and wear it at the most unexpected occasion, or with the most unexpected outfit to look effortlessly stylish the way Audrey and Holly would.

Long Gloves

Along with the huge pearls, in the same breakfast scene in front of the Tiffany's window, Hepburn also wore long black gloves to accessorize her little black dress. The effect was very dramatic and over the top, but again - still effortless.

Yes, she was dressed to the nines before it was even noon, but Holly's carefree spirit allowed her to pull it off because she never seemed like she was trying too hard.

So throw on a pair of long black gloves with a little black dress (or whatever you want) to channel your inner Audrey, and make sure to wear them with a carefree, "I just threw this on" attitude to make the look authentic and slightly casual.

The Oversized Sunnies

Another Audrey trademark are the oversized sunglasses she wore. Get yourself a dark pair, (slight cat-eye shapes work best) to exude old Hollywood glamour and mystery.

The Fur Pullover

One of my favorite pictures of Audrey is when she's walking into a Hollywood studio with her dog. She's wearing a scarf wrapped around her head and neck, dark oversized sunglasses, slim black pants, black flats, a woven bag and a pullover made out of fur.

I've never seen anyone pull off wearing a fur pullover, let alone have I seen anyone wear fur so unpretentiously that they glamorous but still natural and accessible.

Audrey chose a pullover that wasn't bulky looking or flashy. It had clean lines and fit her like an oversized t-shirt, it looked tasteful and refined.

A fur pullover might be hard to find these days, but to get this dramatic look wear an elegant, slim fitting faux fur jacket in dark brown or black. But be sure to keep the rest of your clothing, makeup and hair simple, to look like you're as authentic (but still glam) as Audrey.
