Accessories to Enhance Your Metal Detecting Experience

Of course having a great metal detector is vital to having a good experience when hunting for treasure or lost items. However, the accessories that you use along with your metal detector can be equally important. Here is a list of some metal detecting accessories that will make your job of searching and retrieving items much easier and more enjoyable.

Headphones

Metal detectors emit a sound when they identify something in or on the ground. Most metal detectors emit different sounds based on what type of material they have found. If you are in a windy or noisy environment it can be difficult to hear or discern what sound was made. A headset will help you to hear the beeps easily without having to strain.

Not only that, but if you are working around other people a good pair of headphones will keep the noise from disturbing them.

The Right Clothing

While you don't need to go overboard, it is a good idea to find some rugged, weather proof clothing to wear while you are out looking. Invest in some sturdy shoes or boots that will protect your feet and keep them dry even in unfavorable conditions. When working with your metal detector you spend a lot of time on your feet so having comfortable, effective shoes is a must.

It is a good idea to dress in layers in case the day becomes hotter or colder than you anticipated. If you are working in a sunny or hot area don't forget a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen to protect yourself from the heat and from UV rays.

A headlamp can also be a very beneficial part of a metal detecting wardrobe in case you stubble upon something fantastic just as it is starting to get dark. When it comes to clothing, use your best judgment and think ahead so that you are prepared and dressed appropriately for whatever you may encounter.

Tools for Digging

Many - if not most - of the objects that you find with your metal detector will be buried in the ground. That means it is important to have the right digging tools with you to get the job done and retrieve whatever is buried in the ground. You won't be doing a lot of heavy digging so there is no need to bring heavy duty digging tools.

Your basic tool kit should have a small shovel, a pickax or a scraper. You can find appropriate tools at most sporting good stores or at your local rock shop. It is a good idea to splurge and spend a little more for higher quality equipment since it tends to last longer and can also make your digging a lot easier.

With these basic accessories and a metal detector you should have everything you need to have a fun, exciting and rewarding metal detecting experience.
