Accountability is Crucial to Personal Finance Success

Aaron Smith
Accountability is defined as an obligation or a willingness to accept responsibility or account for one's actions. Accountability is often used when describing things in life such as your actions or how you live your life, but accountability is definitely a must when it comes to personal finance as well.

If you are like most people out there you have set some financial goals that you would like to meet over time. If you haven't done this, I strongly encourage you to do so. Setting personal finance goals is a great first step in taking responsibility for how your situation will unfold. Think about where you want to get in life and then realize what you will need to get there. Money is definitely not the most important thing in life, but if you don't have enough money it can certainly keep you from getting where you want to go.

As someone who has a great deal of experience in the personal finance and investment fields I find that often individuals are unwilling to step up and be financially accountable. While it is easy to make excuses for things that have gone wrong in life or give explanations why you can't do something, you'll find that the more time you do this the less time you have to actually meet your goals. No doubt in today's economy personal finances are hard to get to where you want them to be, but even with the curveballs that are thrown at you it is in your best interest to have a strong set of principles that you use to try to meet your financial goals.

How do you practice financial accountability? The best way is to constantly track your progress and see if you are where you want to be. If you aren't where you want to be, sit down and decide what you need to do to get to that point. Set a time every month or so where you track how you are doing in meeting your financial goals. Understand that your goals may need to change over time as different situations arise, but always do your best to meet those goals and take responsibility for your finances. In order to meet your goals and be completely accountable you'll likely need to make some compromises and sacrifices, but that is how most things are in life. Meeting your financial goals won't be easy, but if you are financially accountable and work hard toward meeting your goals, the rewards can be tremendous!
