Acer Aspire One KAV60

An All-Business Machine for Grown-Ups on the Go

J.S. Anand

An increasing number of professionals find it more and more difficult to imagine life without their Acer Netbook Aspire One KAV60. It does nearly everything they need a computer to do when they are on the go. Its built-in Wi-Fi capability and light weight make it extremely mobile, allowing them to take their work wherever they need. It is not as powerful as the larger notebook and laptop computers, but that, too can be an advantage. The Aspire One's rather basic capabilities protect it from getting hijacked by children.

Anyone who has ever worked with laptop computers quickly learns that "portability" is a relative term. Try toting around an 18.4" monster with internal DVD burner for a whole day, say, on an airport. A laptop that size can weigh up to 10 pounds. Add to that the carrying case and anything a frequent traveler may choose to cram into it. When you're on the go all the time, your laptop case often becomes a substitute for a purse. In addition, many airlines require you to check laptops in, especially when you're riding on a smaller commuter plane. That's a serious concern for many frequently travelers, since checked luggage can get lost in transit.

The Aspire One KAV60, by comparison, weighs roughly 2 pounds, and its 10.1" screen makes it small enough to fit into a shopping bag or woman's purse. At the end of the day, there are no callouses on your hands from carrying it all day and no sore spots from the carrying case's shoulder strap. The Aspire One is not big enough to worry about having to check it as luggage when you board a plane. Size matters, after all.

The Aspire One KAV60 is equipped with a 802.11b/g Wi-Fi connection and a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port, allowing you to connect your netbook to your wireless network at home and most public networks, as well. This means you can keep working on important projects at your local coffee shop with a public Wi-Fi network or while waiting for your connecting flight at the airport.

With a RAM of 1GB and a 140G hard disk, the Aspire One can handle most office suites, such as MS Office and OpenOffice, and it is powerful enough for doing research on the Internet and watching streaming video from websites like Youtube and Netflix. However, it is not not a gaming machine. It cannot handle graphics intensive games, like World of Warcraft or Call of Duty. The Acer Aspire One KAV60 does not have a built-in DVD drive, although you can purchase one that plugs into one of the Aspire One's three USB ports. This makes installing undesired games onto it more difficult.
