It is important to remember that sunless tanners do not contain sunscreen and since it is a sunless tan and not a real tan your skin is still as susceptible to burning as it is without a tan. Therefore, you will need to take precautions to prevent getting sunburn.
A few simple tips to get the best sunless tan possible
* Start With a Good Quality Tanner:
The best sunless tanner I have ever found is L'Oreal Sublime Bronze. When I use Sublime Bronze my skin feels healthy has a nice even tan that is glowing and healthy. I love it!
* Ex-foliate:
Always ex-foliate your skin really well before using a sunless tanner. Ex-foliating and using body lotion the day before will prepare your skin for a beautiful smooth tan, while also insuring your tan will last longer.
* Don't Overdo it:
Take note on how much body lotion you generally need for a certain area of your body. That will most likely be how much tanner you need for a specific area. It's best to use to little than to use too much.
* Apply Tanner Evenly:
Apply the tanner just as you would with any other lotion. Just watch to make sure you are getting it even. I prefer to use tanners that have a bit of tint. A tinted tanner will have just enough color to it so you can easily see where you are applying it.
When using a tinted tanner you can easily check your tan in a mirror to make sure your tan is even. If you notice streaks, it is best to correct them immediately. You can usually do this by applying a tiny bit of tanner to a cotton ball and going over the area. This will smudge and blend any problem area.
* Scrub the Palms of Your Hands:
Immediately after applying tanner, I use a body scrub or facial scrub to wash my hands. I scrub them with the scrub this leaves the palms of my hands soft, smooth and tan free.
After I have made sure I won't have tanned palms, I finish my tan by tanning the tops of my hands and my face.
* Applying Tanner to the Face and Hands:
In order to tan the tops of my hands I find it helps to apply tanner to a cotton ball and use the cotton ball to apply the tanner to the top of each hand. This is also the way in which I apply tanner to my face.
Help! Splotchy or Uneven Tan:
If by some chance you do end up with a splotchy or uneven tan with a sunless tanner, you can speed up the removal of the tan by using a gentle body scrub daily until it fads away. Cleansing the skin with Witch Hazel on a washcloth will also help remove any unsightly tan mistakes a little more quickly. Wash in circular motions and don't rub the skin. You want to fade the tan not irritate the skin.
A sunless tanner that is properly applied will fad away over a period of approximately 7 days.
