Achieving Well-Rounded Success in 2009: My New Year's Resolution

Stephanie J. Graham
One of the things I have always told myself is that before I reach the age of 30 I would like to be a well-rounded, successful individual. I have had many setbacks along the way, whether it be my own mistakes or through situations out of my control. In 2009, I plan on changing that by focusing more on myself by: writing down my specific goals; remaining consistent in my pursuits; leaning on God; and learning to trust myself.

I cannot begin to tell you how hard it has been to focus on myself the past few years or should I say all my life. Everything has always been about my parents and what they want; my relatives and what they want; my significant other and what he wants; and now, my newborn and what he wants and needs. The decisions made in the past and present have always been made because of them. I've never really focused on what I want and this is one of the reasons for the constant indecisiveness in my career path and life.

Do not get me wrong, I am in no way blaming them; it is all my doing. As long as I can remember it has always been in my nature to put what everyone else's wants before my own. I just feel guilty when I do not cater to the needs of others.

However, this year is going to be different. I have just recently started to make some changes and I will definitely continue in my pursuit. I will have to set boundaries on what I will and will not do. This means learning to say "No" sometimes, especially if the request can be done without my help.

This time I am going to make certain that I achieve my goals by writing them down. For some reason writing down the things that are important to me makes it more concrete. When doing this I will indicate what my goals are and how I will go about achieving them, in detail. The list will include my career goals, what I would like to change about myself personally, and what I would like to change about my everyday life.

The third step in achieving success in 2009 is learning to be consistent and determined. In 2009 I will finish what I have started. If I decide to choose a certain career path I will stick with it even when things get complicated. If I decide to change some of my bad habits I will stick to it until I begin to make progress. One of the keys to success in anything is never giving up and always putting your best foot forward.

An essential step to achieving well rounded success in 2009 is the belief that all things are through God and that without him we will not get too far. God has a purpose for me and I am determined to find out what it is. Therefore, I have decided to allow him to guide me. With his guidance and my hard work success is imminent.

The final step in my path to success is trusting in my-self. Many of the bad decisions I have made in the past are due to the lack of trust that I have in my ability to make the right decisions. I often say to myself, "I knew I should have." As a result, I have grown to learn that when I listen to my gut I often fair better.

Achieving well rounded success is going to be one of the most difficult of all my many goals. It is not easy to get rid of those old habits. Hopefully these five steps will help me to progress in the right direction in 2009.
