Acid Attacks Continue in Hong Kong, No Clues and No Arrests

Sherry Tomfeld
Who's attacking people in the Hong Kong area with bottles of dropped acid? Police and pedestrians alike would love to know who is behind the wicked attacks. The latest acid attack involved bottles of acid being dropped in a crowd in the Kowloon area. 15 people were injured, reportedly only slightly. 9 of those persons were tourist and 1 was a child.

Hong Kong has had a rash of acid attacks in the last year. The attacks started in December of 2008. To date there are at least 100 people who have been injured. The bottles of acid are dropped into crowds. At least 3 acid attacks have occurred in the Mong Kok area of Hong Kong. The people dropping the acid bottles don't seem to care who it injures. Women, men and children have all received injuries from the acid attacks.

Officials are baffled at who is committing the attacks. Officials have spent 1.7 million (approx. $190,00. American dollars) on a new camera surveillance system. Officials are asking for help from the public on identifying the acid attackers.

No reason has been given for the acid attacks. Oddly, they usually fall on Saturday evenings and usually around the same time of night. And always when there are crowds.

Other attacks occurred in December of 2008 with 46 injured.
June 2009 with 24 injured with one being a 4 year old boy.
May 2009 saw 30 people injured in Hong Kong.

There is no reason to think that the acid attacks are over or ending anytime soon. Officials do not know if there is a lone person or a group that are committing the acid attacks.

The acid attacks are carried out on some of the busiest streets in Hong Kong. The economy of this area of Hong Kong may well be affected if the acid attacks continue. Hong Kong has a huge population that share a small space. One wonders if the acid attacks are an attempt to sway businesses in some manner.

Whether the acid attacks are being committed by an unbalanced individual, a gang or mob, the economics of having bottles of acid dropped on consumers may lead to some businesses losing customers that will chose to shop in what they deem is a safer, less crowded area.

One response to continued acid attacks in Hong Kong is establishing a surveillance system atop high rise buildings where people are dropping acid from above. More here: http://toglobalist.org/2011/01/of-acid-and-arsonists/

While installing a surveillance system in the city might pinpoint the perpetrators of acid violence, it will not prevent the attacks from occurring. It seems lawmakers need to target the root of the problem instead of recording the aftermath.
