Acidophilus: Improve digestive health - what is acidophilus?
According to The BIG Vitamin Dictionary:
"Acidophilus is lactic bacteria that are one-celled micro-organisms essential in the digestive tract for performing many functions necessary to promote immunity and and proper nutrition. It helps digestion, produces natural antibiotics, manufactures vital nutrients, and regulates elimination. Acidophilus also balances digestion, and is a treatment for diarrhea and constipation."
Many people have digestive problems that can cause a lot of discomfort and disrupt their lives. Digestive problems make it hard to enjoy a meal, and many people avoid eating as much as possible to prevent digestive discomfort.
Digestive discomfort may be caused by a lack of sufficient acidophilus in the digestive tract. If this is the case, acidophilus may help improve digestive health.
Acidophilus: Improve digestive health - my experience
I have suffered with digestive problems off and on my entire life. There have been times when eating created so much discomfort for me that I would avoid eating out with friends, and often would not eat lunch when I was at work.
Usually when I ate, I'd get a sharp pain in my stomach followed by cramping. I'd often feel like I had to use the bathroom when really I didn't need to. It was painful and extremely disruptive. I felt like I could not function as well as I normally could, because of the digestive irritation and from not eating the way I needed to. I hated it and wanted it to stop.
Someone later told me about acidophilus and how it is thought to help some digestive problems. So I thought I'd check it out. I was willing to try just about anything at that point.
The specific brand I tried was Nature's Own. I took two capsules twice a day. Once with breakfast and once with dinner. I didn't notice a change in my symptoms for about two weeks. But after two weeks I did start to see some improvement.
I was able to eat lunch without experiencing painful cramping. I still felt a little irritation while I was eating, but within a few minutes after eating the irritation subsided. I also had less stomach pain when I woke up in the morning.
Acidophilus did not completely eliminate my digestive problems, but it did improve my digestive health. The problems were not as severe as they were before taking acidophilus.
Acidophilus: Improve digestive health - a final word
If you experience digestive problems such as the ones I described above, it may be due to a lack of acidophilus. Talk to your doctor to find out if acidophilus could help improve digestive health for you.
