Some cleansing products contain comedogenic fatty acids (sticky fats that cling to pores) and penetrating oils. Sodium lauryl sulphate and laureth-4 are highly comedogenic, and any cleansers and other skin and hair care products containing these cleaning solutions should not be used on acne-prone skin. Use only a cleanser that is washed off with water immediately after cleaning and always follow with plenty of rinsing.
Medicated acne soaps or soaps with scrubbing grains or exfoliates are highly marketed to acne sufferers. The cure from these products is based on the myth that dirt is the main cause of acne. Scrubbing can not reach deep down into pores that are already blocked. They can only scrub away the surface leaving more room for oils and dirt that cannot easily be scrubbed away to settle. Nor do antibacterial ingredients accomplish anything at all below the surface, all antibacterial formulations need to be applied directly to the problem, which means scrubbing it into your pores causing more blockage and even more chance of a pimple.
Most special acne soaps and scrubs are a waste of money. Worse than that, some may even be harmful; too many scrub their faces raw with these soaps and abrasive gadgets. Your skin needs to heal after each treatment, but the product claims it needs to be used every day to be effective. Under the proper circumstances, a few seconds of gentle scrubbing with mild soap and water once a day is all that is needed to remove the dry skin and dirt and oil from your face.
Cleansing is one of the most important things you can do for your skin, and it is the only thing that has been proven to work, aside from a lifestyle change to exercise and eat healthy. Keep the bacteria at bay and you have your magical acne prevention. Most acne sufferers want their acne to disappear in the fastest way possible and tend to overuse scrubs and cleansers; this is doing more harm than good. The skin should be treated delicately, you only get one skin so treat it kindly.
