Acne -Three Most Common Types of Acne

It seems that acne has tormented people for what seems forever! If you develop a better understanding of which acne type you may have; you will give yourself a much better chance of treating the acne correctly.

The spots that you may have could be symptoms of acne "vulgaris", acne "rosacea" or even a very severe type of acne. Either way, the 3 groups of acne that I have listed all have their own individual kinds symptoms which will allow us to distinguish which one you may have.

In this article I will focus on the 2 main groups of acne (vulgaris and rosacea) and hopefully you will be able to classify your form of acne so you can treat the acne symptoms successfully.

Acne vulgaris

This is the most common form of acne that people experience. The lesions that you would find with this kind of acne would be pustules, whiteheads and blackheads. In more severe cases of acne vulgaris you may find cysts and nodules.

· Whiteheads are small white spots that are caused by dead skin cells, oil and bacteria trapped in a blocked pore causing a white spot on the surface. However sometimes they are so small they are not visible to the naked eye.

· Pustules are similar to whiteheads, but they tend to be red and inflamed and often with a yellow center. Many people have trouble controlling themselves from popping whiteheads or pustules; if the spot is on the surface and you pop the spot with precautions it shouldn't do too much damage. You must clean your face and hands thoroughly though and also use a clean tissue when squeezing.

· Blackheads develop when a pore is partly blocked letting bacteria, dead skin cells and oil to slowly appear onto the skin surface. The common belief that blackheads are black because of dirt is not true. In fact the color is due to the skins pigmentation that changes color when it reacts with the oxygen. Blackheads can be extremely difficult to get rid of.

· Papules have the similar likeliness to pustules in that they are inflamed red bumps but they don't have a head. They should not be squeezed; this will worsen the problem and cause scarring!

The more severe cases of acne vulgaris can cause cysts and nodules:

· Acne nodules have a much larger appearance. They are hard lumps under the skin and the lesion could last for several months. They could lead to scarring if you squeeze them and don't leave them alone.

· Acne cysts have a similar appearance to nodules. However they normally are pus-filled and around 5mm in width. They can be painful and again if they are not left alone they will last much longer and will lead to scarring!

Acne rosacea

This kind of acne is often confused with acne vulagaris due to the appearance of the spots, they are very similar. However rosacea tends to found in people over the age of 30 and will appear as a rash on the forehead, chin, cheeks or nose.

This is more commonly found in women than in men. If you suspect you have this type of acne then you need to seek the advice of a doctor to avoid swelling and excess tissue growth.

Severe acne

The third group of acne is severe but very uncommon. It can be very damaging to those that experience it. Acne conglobata, pyoderma faciale and gram-negative folliculits all come into the acne severe group. This condition needs to definitely be treated by a dermatologist.

Acne can spoil anyone's confidence and self-esteem, but at least you can determine the type of acne you may suffer from and establish the routine and skin care products for your skin.
