Out of 5 stars - I give it a 4.5.
This 4-step acne system kit contains the powerful acne-fighting ingredient Benzoyl Peroxide.
Since my teens I have tried numerous acne products, and wasted a lot of money on useless trips to the dermatologist.
Lets face it - acne is ugly and it hurts. I used Proactiv in the past, and it worked well for me most of the time. Every now and then my face would get another annoying breakout, and it didn't help that it was expensive after adding sales tax and shipping. On trips to Walmart and Target, I would come across University Medical's AcneFree Acne System. I was a bit skeptical, always leaving the store without it. Then one day I noticed they came out with the "Severe" version of the AcneFree system. On the box it said "Severe to Clear" Starts the Next Day - Guaranteed!" It said "guaranteed" so I decided to purchase from Walmart at a great cost of $25.00. For a 4-step acne system, it's a pretty good deal. The directions on the box were also simple to follow. The 4 products the kit contains is the Benzoyl Peroxide Anti-bacterial Cleansing Wash, the Corrective Toner, the Maximum Strength Benzoyl Peroxide Repair Lotion, and the Retinol Renewal Complex Cream. This kit is suitable for all ages and skin types.
Step 1: The Benzoyl Peroxide Anti-bacterial Cleansing Wash kills bacteria and clears away dead skin cells. It has a grainy texture to help exfoliate the dead skin cells from your skin to clear your pores. It contains 10% time-released benzoyl peroxide (so it works all day long). The directions are to use this cleansing wash twice a day, once in the morning and once at night.
Step 2: The Corrective Toner helps rebalance the skin by removing dead skin cells and excess oils. Use a cotton ball to rub the toner all over your face. Use the toner twice a day, once in the morning and once at night, following the cleansing wash.
Step 3: The Maximum Strength Benzoyl Peroxide Repair Lotion helps kill acne bacteria and prevent new acne lesions from forming. The repair lotion also has a grainy texture like the cleansing wash, and it also contains the 10% time-released benzoyl peroxide. This lotion is to be applied once a day in the morning following the cleansing wash and toner. Applying this lotion can be a little tricky - it dries real fast. It is important that you don't massage it in as you would a regular face lotion. Just smear it all over the face, starting at the forehead, down to the cheeks, nose, and then to your chin and jawline area. Avoid rubbing anything on the neck as it is a very sensitive area. It also helps to apply some facial lotion (I use Neutrogena healthy defense no-tint face lotion) before the repair lotion in the morning so it glides on more easily and moisturizes at the same time.
Step 4: The Retinol Renewal Complex Cream stimulates cell turnover for softer, healthier looking skin. The retinol cream is to be applied once a day at night, following the cleansing wash and toner. Make sure you let your toner dry on your face for at least 10 minutes before applying the cream for the most effective results. When applying this cream be sure to massage it into your skin with your fingertips. Massaging your facial skin daily while applying creams helps stimulate the blood flow (plus it creates a rosy glow).
As with any acne product, you have to stick to it to see the results. Your skin will naturally have to cycle out all the impurites and oils from your skin before you achieve the acne-free skin you desire. This kit can be strong and irritating at first, but eventually your skin will adjust to it. Give it time! If you find that you can't handle it, then instead of using the cleansing wash in the morning just splash your face with some water and follow with the toner, neutrogena lotion, and benzoyl peroxide repair lotion (continue to use the cleansing wash only at night). You can also use the retinol cream every other night instead of every night. On the nights you don't use it, just apply some non-comedogenic oil-free facial lotion instead. Be patient. It took about 6 weeks for me to have completely acne-free skin (except for that special monthly breakout). It's worth it. I now have clearer skin thanks to the AcneFree Severe Acne Treatment System!
I rated it a 4.5 out of 5 because it is a little drying. Just make sure you moisturize a lot. You don't want a dry face because all those dead skin cells will clog your pores. For more information on managing your acne, check out my article "A Guide to Clearer, Acne Free Skin."
