ACORN Senate Vote Not Unanimous; 7 Senators Vote Against Senate Amendment 2355

List of Senators Stood with ACORN

Carly Hart
In the wake of the almost daily barrage of videos appearing on Fox News showing ACORN employees giving bad tax and loan document fraud advice to an alleged pimp and prostitute, the Senate voted on an Amendment to HR 3288 which would strip funding from ACORN. Regardless of the alleged illegal way tape was obtained, particularly in Baltimore, Maryland, the videos were enough to give most Senators pause. However, despite the damning video evidence mounting against ACORN, the ACORN Senate vote was not unanimous. Instead, it passed the Senate 83 - 7, with 9 Senators not voting. Here's a list of who voted Nay for the ACORN Senate vote and a list of who didn't vote at all. How did your Senator vote?

ACORN Senate vote: Who voted against Senate Amendment 2355 to HR 3288?

The nay votes ran strictly down party lines. The 7 negative votes cast against Senate Amendment 2355 to H.R. 3288, which would have prohibited the use of funds to fund ACORN, were cast by 6 Democrats and 1 Independent. No Republicans voted against the Amendment. Those voting nay on this Amendment were:

Burris (D) from Illinois;
Casey (D) from Pennsylvania;
Durbin (D) from Illinois;
Gillibrand (D) from New York;
Leahy (D) from Vermont;
Sanders (I) from Vermont; and
Whitehouse (D) from Rhode Island.

Which 9 Senators didn't vote on Senate Amendment 2355 to HR 3288?

Of the 9 Senators who didn't vote, 7 of them were Republicans. Republicans not voting on this measure were:

Burr (R) from North Carolina;
Graham (R) from South Carolina;
McCain (R) from Arizona;
Coburn (R) from Oklahoma;
Gregg (R) from New Hampshire;
Vitter (R) from Louisiana;
Hutchison (R) from Texas

The two Democratic Senators not casting a vote were:

Byrd (D) from West Virginia; and
Mikulski (D) from Maryland.

Senators not voting were simply not present for the vote. Not voting does not mean abstaining from voting.

Analysis of ACORN Senate vote

The American public is tired of government waste and the nearly daily appearance of yet another damning ACORN video is just fueling the fire of discontent. This ACORN Senate vote shows that most of the Senators are listening to America. With just one or two videos hitting the airwaves, the appearance of ACORN corruption can be explained away as rogue ACORN workers. The third video was the last straw for many and Glenn Beck promises to reveal an even more egregious fourth video on his show on Fox News at 5:00 PM today.

Given our nation's current deficit, which grows higher every day, Americans want to see some fiscal responsibility and the Senate Amendment to strip ACORN funding is the first step, albeit a baby step, to showing the American public that the government can manage their tax dollars in a responsible manner.

    I am proud of the senators who voted against the bill and the senators who did not show up to vote on the measure. the bill is unjust and hypocritical. What about all those big wig bankers and walstreet punks? why isn't there an aggressive effort to prosecute them? is it because they are rich white business men.

    and all this high holy moral talk about protecting children from sex slavery is a joke. it is the rich white buesiness men who go to poor countries like the ones in asia to have sex with asian girls. so this holy holy acorn is wicked and wasteful talk is BS.

    Excellent coverage! Too bad that only public pressure and not an innate sense of right and wrong compels today's politicians to act.

    Now if only the House will deny them funds...we'll see what Pelosi does.

    Political extremism involves two prime ingredients: an excessively simple diagnosis of the world's ills, and a conviction that there are identifiable villains back of it all. -- John W. Gardner

    You all need to find a new boogeyman.

    Thanks to the seven senators that voted against this nonsensical amendment.

    Makes one wonder if each of the 7 depend on their local ACORN for voting support or perhaps some other vested interest ???

    ACORN needs to be investigated. Apparently they are willing to assist any scam artist in obtaining a home loan. What impact has ACORN's fraudelent home loan applications had on causing the current housing meltdown? They have offices located throughout the US including California where the housing crisis has been particularly acute.

    I am most pleased that this was bi-partisan, but I want to see it go deeper than face-saving.

    Excellent coverage Carly.

    Nicely Written :)

    I was relieved to see both IN senators voted to cut off funding. But, I haven't heard of anyone championing a full investigation of Acorn, or where similar action is occurring in the house. The money still flows.
