Across the Universe: A Film Review

Angela Colley
Finally a musical for non-musical types. Julie Taymor's cult phenomenon film tells the tale of six struggling youths in New York City during the turbulent 60's era. Using Beatles songs to wove their stories, Julie highlights all the historical events of the 1960's and how each effected the lives of the main characters.

From the beginning to the end the film the plot uses popular Beatles songs like "Hey Jude" to describe the cultural events that changed the lives of the characters, as well as the nation. Julie leaves no stone of the flower-child era unturned, and the plot never breaches less then amazing. In spite of it's heavily historical background, two emotional romances are intertwined through out the film, and a romantic-drama feel to the plot.

The scenery is a captivating hodge podge of styles. From realistic sets, to still animation, to CGI enhanced underwater scenes, the style of the film truly reflects the conflicting personalities, and spirits, of a generation. The costume design is a mix of Bohemian flair and styles resembling a Beatles album cover. Put together, the scenery and the costumes transport you to a different time.

The music of the film is entirely comprised of Beatle's remakes sung by the film's actors. there are 33 songs used in the film, counting the beginning and ending credits, and each has a unique feel. The songs were recognizable enough to be sung along to by an audience of baby boomers, but each had been updated enough to give them a modern feel.

The cast list was a mix of new and seasoned talent. The majority of the major roles went to younger unknown talent, while a number of seasoned veterans held cameos. Joe Cocker, Eddie Izzard and Bono were among some of the many smaller roles held in the film, and every actor shown performed a musical number.

Overall, this was a captivating film, worthy of being watched over and over again. Baby Boomer's are sure to get a nostalgic look at a defining moment in American history, and younger audiences will be enthralled by the films scenery and musical remakes.

Across the Universe is available on DVD in a 2-Disc special edition. There are two versions of the soundtrack available, one standard edition containing 16 songs, and a deluxe edition with all 33 songs. Individual songs are available for purchase at I-Tunes.
