Act 4 Amy

Roxanne Hicks
On January 24, 2010 Amy Sue Root jumped on her scooter for a quick ride. Sadly it was not a typical ride for an eight year old she did not come in after her ride and ask for a snack, or annoy her little brother....instead she was hit by a truck and is critically injured. Amy Sue has suffered severe head injuries among other traumatic injuries. Her mother is a single mother with other children who is undergoing huge challenges both financially and emotionally to be with her daughter. Amy spent one month at Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach in the Intensive Care Unit. Recently she was moved to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando, FL. The family is staying at Ronald McDonald House in Orlando while Amy Sue is there.

A group of her friends and community members have formed the Amy Sue Root Recovery Fund. Benefits, fundraisers and other activities have been planned, attended and supported by the community. Additional benefits and activities are planned in the coming months. What started as a group of mothers in the community trying to help one of their own has quickly turning into a safety awareness cause.

Act 4 Amy is determined to bring helmet safety and no phone zones to a neighborhood near you. All children should have a helmet on when riding their bike or scooter, even if it is just a quick ride around the neighborhood. No Exceptions. Also on the radar of the group is the No Phone Zone, promoting NO texting, emailing or even calling without a hands free device when operating a motor vehicle. Part of the fundraising activities is the sale of bracelets promoting helmet safety and the no phone zone.

AAA is sponsoring a Chamber Challenge with these safety factors in the forefront. The Southeast Volusia Chamber is participating with proceeds going to Amy Sue. What a wonderful group of people.

The question is.. can one small community group raise enough money so that this mother of three can survive what is a long and uncertain road ahead in the recovery of her daughter? They are sure going to try, if you are in or near the New Smyrna Beach, Florida area consider a donation to the Amy Sue Root Recover y Fund. This sweet little girl could be any one of our children, please consider taking a moment to support her and her family and be sure to hold your children close.
